Climate system, or air conditioning system, resets on startup

Hi All,

I have a 2012 Camry Hybrid that has developed a new problem over the last week or so. It revolves around the whole climate control system (or air conditioning system).

Every time we start the car up, the climate system appears dead. no lights, screen blank and nothing works. Then, after a minute or two, things start turning on. Temp is always set at 75 and the fan is on high. Auto setting is on. If we then adjust the fan or temp down the Auto setting turns off.

1) Any idea what might be going wrong here? I'm of course hoping its something minor like a fuse or something. I suppose even replacing the instrument would be ok'ish. As compared to a random electrical problem that takes days to troubleshoot resulting in thousands of dollars in labor costs on top of parts.

2) We "think" the Auto function used to stay on even after we adjusted the volume and temp. Always hard to quite remember exactly what was normal before but something is different with this behavior.

Thanks for any advice you can offer here.

I noticed there are multiple fuses around the AC unit. I dont see one specifically labeled "HVAC".

Inside the engine compartment there is fuse:
#7 - 50 amp

Under the instrument panel there is:
#3 mentions the AC - 10 amp
#10 - 7.5 amp
#25 - 7.5 amp

Also, on the ECM fuse - could you be more specific on that. I could not find one labeled "ECM" and I tried looking for something called "electronically controlled m....".

Sorry to be a pain.

7HTR50Air conditioning system
24IG2-MAIN7,5IGN, INJ, METER-IG2, ECU-IG2 NO.3, A/B, ECU-IG2 NO.2, ECUIG2 NO.1
That's main fuse box under the hood

cabin one:

3PANEL10Switch illumination, air conditioning system, shift lever light, glove box light, audio system, navigation system, personal lights, interior lights
10A/C-IG17,5Air conditioning system, PTC heater
25A/C-B7,5Air conditioning system

35ECU-ACC7,5Clock, outside rear view mirrors, multiplex communication system, audio system, navigation system
As it's a lot of fuses, do one at the time. And PLEASE do not forget where it came from.

I did the 4 inside the cabin last night. Placing them back this morning it looks like that might have done the trick as the climate control unit works on start up again and appears to retain prior settings. Auto works like we remember too.

Not sure if a longer time may result in it losing its memory again so I'll leave it off all day today and test it again tonight.

Thanks again for your help!

Well, truly, you need to completely discharge the system. that is done by disconnecting 12V and touching - DISCONNECTED - battery cables + to -. That removes all residual power in the system.
But, I am very opposed to disconnecting 12V on hybrids.
Let's see what happens.
Another route is to go see dealer and have them re flash the system with s/w.

Just a follow up. After letting the car sit for a day the problem basically returned. A couple minutes until the unit starts showing numbers and being responsive to adjustment.

I never did the two fuses inside the engine compartment. Partly I think I was intimidated. #7 appears to be part of some large fuse block where you have to pull the whole block. Cant just pull the one fuse. And if I recall I was unsure which one was #24. The actual fuses dont quite look like the neat little picture on the website. I have a dislike for doing something that feels random when I dont know the consequences. I can give it a go though, just wanted to mention it here.

I also have an aversion to bring cars into the dealer for random electrical work. Past experience has shown me you end up paying thousands of dollars for troubleshooting time, for a $5 part or something dumb.

Luckily my son is away at college so we have use of his old beater when we are troubleshooting this one.

Thanks again :)

One of the motorized actuators under the dash has failed. do a self check once things power up. Check vent operation and temps on both sides. I had heat only on one side. once I changed the passenger side temp control motor everything was normal again. Including instant start up of the controls and retaining the settings upon restarting,

Hi, I just read your question and this is exactly the problem that I have with my 2012 toyota camry xle. One thing to add is , when turning on the car SHORTLY after being turned off it tends not to reset to 75.. I am wondering if you figured out yet what was causing your trouble . Please let me know thanks !

I'm sorry - I really don't know what solved this. I've tried to remember what we did but I just dont know. I sort of think we had to bring it to the dealer and they fixed it. But I'm not 100% sure on that. I do recall pulling the fuses did not help, and I recall bringing it to the dealer around that time. But the details are now fuzzy.

Oh ! one more thing to add, at the same time that this trouble started my defroster vents by front windshield stopped working and floor vents as well. It only blows out of face vents... Anyone?

I have the same car, same year and same problem- please let me know when someone figures this out.

One of the actuators for the air vent or blend... that controls the mixture of hot air with cold air and/or switching air output vent is either stuck or broken.

So, when the power is turned ON, the last position does not match the set temp command. And the system goes to initialization mode.

You can check this by turning the temp all the way up to HI and observe whether cold air still comes from either passenger or driver side vent. Then turn all the way down to LO, see if hot air comes out of any vents.

Switch the mode from upper vents to lower vents & observe whether it works well.

If you haven't noticed anything unusual about the temp control, then the problem is likely to be on the passenger side.
