Anybody have a suggestion about cause(s) for cold idle problem for 85 Corolla? When engine is started when cold (summer or winter, doesn't matter), rough idle and it usually dies. Need to keep giving it gas. After it warms up, no problem.

my car also does this, it is from not having enough gas in the carberator I would think. Once i give it one rev up to about 2000RPMs i just let my foot off the gas and it seems to work fine after that. Nothing you can really do thats costly worthwhile
There should be enough gas in the carburetor. Carburetors have the floatbowl that is sort of a sumptank for gasoline. If you didnt have enough gasoline in the carburetor, it wouldnt show on idle, it would show on WOT.
I also have the gas problem. If I don't drive the car for many days, it takes a lot of crank then pump the accelerator, crank then pump, and so on to get enough gas to even start. But that issue seems unrelated to the cold start problem that I first mentioned. After it starts, the slow idle is still an issue.
Could it be a problem with the choke mechanism. I had an 82 Dodge colt. The choke mechanism had a compartment with some sort of wax in it. This would melt as the engine heated up. This in turn switched off the choke mechanism. After a while the wax dissappeared. Could it be a similiar thing here.
My 86 corrolla starts most of the time on the first turn when it is cold. Then it runs rough. Give it a minute blip the throttle and its fine. Many times when it is hot, it does not like to start. Do you know to push the throttle pedal before you start to reset the choke. There is not much that is antomatic in this vintage.
