continuous warning sound when turning ignition OFF

Today when I wanted to get out of the LC the moment I turned the ignition off it started doing this irritating continuous sound. Kind of like when the headlight is left on I guess. But the headlights are not on, they are on auto but even when turned to off position the sound keeps going. I also checked all the doors but nothing seems to stop the noise. In the end I just disconnected the battery but that really isn't a lasting solution.
Oh and no warning lights are on.

What might be part of it is that it has been raining here for the past few days, I live in Southern California so that is a rarity. the forst day my rouf was leaking and got the car pretty damp. I now have a tarp over it but not everything has dried yet. maybe this has generated a short somewhere?

anyways I hope someone here has any idea of what it might be, would love to fix this without spending a fortune at the dealers.

Ignition switch may need cleaning and lubing. The warning sound should work when you leave the key in it. And when you pull the key out, the warning sound should turn off. Maybe some type of lock lube will solve it.

If your talking about the moonroof or sunroof, it should have drain tube connected to it for rain water. It maybe just clogged with debris like dirt and leaves. Look around in forums to find an easy way of cleaning it out.

oh wow, i never knew about the drain tube, thanks! I think it actually already stopped leaking once i got all the leaves out from under the moonroof wind deflector but I will definetly look into that tube.

As for the lock: yeah it crossed my mind it might have something to do with that but doesn't the key make the dinging sound? this is a continuous high pitched beeeeeeeeep. I will try your suggestion in the morning though and get some lock lube.

Thanks a lot, great advice!

You might be right about the different sound between the two. The running and headlights make the continuous sound and the key just make s the ding sound. Are the running lights ON by any chance while this problem occurs?

no, the lights are off (when on auto-mode) they turn off when the driver side door is opened and i also manually turned them off.
That's where my short idea came in... I figured with it having rained for days now (it almost never rains here) something might have gotten wet and shorts.

Another thing though: when i disconnected the battery and reconnected fairly quick the sound started again instantly (witout doing anything, it just picked up where it left off). when i had the battery disconnected longer the sound stayed off when i reconnected BUT after driving it again and turning off i started again.

I think that it is the sound that would be made if the moon roof is left open and you turn the car off. Your problem may be in the switch that is activated when the roof closes. It may be sensing that the roof is still open and gives you that warning.

Also there is a warning for leaving the key in the ignition and you open the door and or lock the doors with the key in the ignition that portion of the switch may be bad. Just a few more ideas.
