Crown Navigation subscription rant

Just a little info. My wife's 2023 Crown is one year old and it's been great.
But......the cloud based navigation does cease to work after the initial 12 month freebie without buying a minimum $15/month subscription. ( I'd rather have some options but nope. Thank you Toyota.)

This is a bit different, there is a real cost in accessing cellular data for traffic routing/rerouting, it’s not like charging to use a device that is already installed in the car and incurs no incremental cost to use. Glad BMWs experiment was an epic fail. That said I’ve had my Crown two months and have yet to use the nav as I have CarPlay enabled and just use Apple Maps at no added cost to me.

Are you still able to use Android Auto or Apple Car Play for Navigation on the main screen, just not the built in Navigation?

My '23 Crown XLE is approaching its 1 year anniversary in mid-April, so I need to decide whether or not to renew the subscriptions. I have been using the Toyota navigation regularly and am generally satisfied with it, although I could easily switch to Android Auto for navigation. I also use the Remote connect features quite often.

So even though I am not thrilled about paying another annual subscription fee, I will probably renew.

I have a one year old 2023 Crown, too, and the nav system stopped. So, as I understand it I have three options: 1) no onboard nav; 2) use my cellphone & Waze/Google/etc. 3) subscribe at $15 per month! Is there another option to install maps to the onboard nav system?

After 4 months of using CarPlay for Nav, getting used to how to find info via display touch, I quite like CarPlay. You can tell Siri a location. Don't have to type it in. Or, verbally tell iPhone Waze a destination and then it will be available to select on the car's display. I mount the iPhone on the dash magnetically and it gives distance to several upcoming turns to back up the map presentation on the display. $180 a month for ten years is $1800. That's real money in my world.

No, we bit the bullet and took the subscription. We really haven't been disappointed though. Last weekend we were on a short trip to the coast and the hurricane spoiled the trip. Instead of taking our normal route home during the evacuation, we let "Hey Toyota" guide us. She routed us around problem traffic which was a plus.

Regarding the Navi system, does anyone know how to turn on the “Breadcrumbs feature” or they may call it something else like route tracing? For some reason I cannot locate anything in the onboard system settings to toggle it?

Thanks gents!

For some reason I cannot locate anything in the onboard system settings to toggle it? NEVERMIND. Found out that the new cloud based navigation system doesn't have the ability to use "breadcrumbs" so it's a non issue. Kinda sucks because it's a very handy tool but oh well Thanks gents!

It's Industry SOP now!
Use Car-play or Google Android for navigation.
My wife's 2022 BMW is subscription free for 5 years and then a one time fee of $325.
If we keep it past 5 years and that fee remains the same I'll pay it since she travels solo to see family in areas with limited or no cell service so having both phone, nav and 1 button emergency services via the satellite system in the car is worth it. I don't use a smart-phone, basic flip phone, so the car's GPS Nav is what I have to use which is exceptional in this particular car.

I searched the owner's manuals, (both of them for you) and couldn't find any references to "Bread" or "Crumb" or "Track" or "Back". I recall using this in my 2003 Nissan Murano, but none of the vehicles we've owned since. On the other hand, I had completely forgotten about it until I read your question. What's your use case for the feature?

This is my 6th Toyota. It will be my last one. Never again will I be held hostage to use a feature my car has built in. Paying these clown additional funds to use my navigation system is extortion!!!! I hope that Toyota no longer keeps loyal customers due to these Woke tactics. No other manufacture pulls this shit on their customers. Congrats Toyota you have now changed the culture that made you a choice car company.

Good luck- most other car companies have done the same thing with subscription services. If you really think about it- Toyota charging you a fee to maintain your navigation is no different than what they've always done- it looks different these days- but twenty years ago you had to pay to get updated maps- Toyota released a new DVD every year... and then they moved to updating it via USB or through the dealership's computer... now they do it over the air- and your maps are updated constantly.

If you don't want to pay- that's fine. Just connect your phone and use Google Maps or one of the other free navigation apps that are available.

But again- you aren't going to find much luck with any other car maker these days- they all are moving towards subscription services.

I feel your frustration. Unfortunately, Toyota isn’t the only manufacturer pulling this crap. There were a couple of them that were actually controlling functions like seat warmers as part of a subscription. I think it’s only going to get worse as time goes on.

The built-in navigation system is just a reskinned Google Maps app. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire software suite is an Android fork. It's certainly glitchy enough.

It's a live service and the payment covers the cost of the cellular connection. It's not like they can just make it free forever, that stuff costs money continuously. If you don't want to pay, they have built-in wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

If you travel much, the new navigation system is worth the monthly fee. It will route you around accidents, traffic jams, and road closures on a "real time" basis. "Hey Toyota" makes it totally hands free. The map is 100% up to date constantly, and the fee included all other Connected Services.

Yes, it’s true you now need to subscribe to your car. Just think of it like being married - you have to stay true and keep up with birthdays and anniversaries and remember the first date etc, etc. The purchase was like the engagement ring, but the relationship is forever :)

I'm right there with you.

Garmin and other companies still sell futurastic up tp date map and nav. devices Nothing wrong with them and they serve the purpuse and they are much cheper than monthly subsc. I got mine with life time map update and used x2 sided tape to mount it flat on the existing usless factory screen (it fit right in there). or you can use the provided mounting hardware and place it where you chose. No one hates technology when it is not a rop off and not destroying earth and humans alike.
