Hi all,

Is there a way to change the 2012 Smart Key system, so I can just touch the driver's door handle and it will unlock all the doors?

According to the manual, I should be able to do it, but the manual said I have to contact the dealer . . .

Anyone can help to change this setting without going to the dealer?

Thanks!!!

There are two separate systems for your door locks if you have SmartKey. The following works on an 08. Knowing Toyota I doubt it has changed.

To change the SmartKey system to open all doors when you touch the handle do the following:

With the engine off, doors closed and standing by the drivers door, hold down the open and close buttons on the fob for about 5 seconds.

When you hear 2 beeps the system is set to open all doors when you touch the handle.

If you do this procedure again you will hear 3 beeps and the system is set to open the drivers door only when you touch the drivers door handle. The system toggles the setting each time you do the procedure.

Changing the fob open button to open all doors with one press requires the dealer to make the change.

So you can have the best of both worlds. Touching the door handle opens all doors and if you are in a dark place and want to only open the drivers door you press the fob button.

Hope that helps

It has been quite a while since yr original post, but did the procedure work on yr 2010? I have read one post which says the procedure did not work and another thread where you are supposed to press the lock and alarm buttons simultaneously. Don't want to take too many chances.. Thanks for your insights.

Hello all,
I tried the procedure to switch to the "all doors unlock" mode on my 2012 Highlander Limited following summerwind's instructions and now the smart key lock/unlock function doesn't work. When the car is locked and I touch the door handle nothing happens. When I try to lock the door with the black button on the door handle of either front door or the rear hatch button ( under the door handle) all I get is a long loud beep.
Holding the lock & unlock buttons on the key fob for 5 seconds will give two beeps (3 beeps the next time I try it) but the malfunction of the smart key function remains the same.
Any ideas? I really hate to go to the dealer with this.
Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you have another key in the car. I found this out when I couldn't lock my highlander because the car was reading my wife's key that was in the car.

Is there any tricks to get all the windows to roll down via the remote like Hondas?

I have a 2008 Camry Hybrid and just bought a Highlander few days back, decided to visit this forum and came across this thread. Not being able to open all doors from drivers side was SUCH a BIG disadvantage, I just did the setup and cannot believe I sent 5 years grieving over it... I wish I had known about this before... But thanks anyways, this will be such a help. Till not I would open my door and everyone would just wait for me to get in and onlock, I felt like a complete moron... This is a life saver.

highlander 2012

I just came from dealer, and kind of disappointing.
I was asking to close all windows and sunroof when I push the lock button(remote or on the door) - the dealer was not able to do this,..:(
And the second I was asking to change to Celsius - they were not able to do that too,.. :(

Now it would be nice if with the smart key you can open any doors right off the bat. For example when I get in the car, the first thing I do is put my laptop bag in the 2nd row. So the first door I open is the rear door. I wish the smart key allows me to just open that and unlock all the other doors. Just saying... :)

I'm sitting here reading through this thread and smiling about how 'spoiled' we've become with the conveniences available in modern cars.

I'm an 'old fart' and in my much younger days had 4 kids, wife, dog and a station wagon without power locks. Getting all that in the car entailed -

1) open the driver's door with the key (insert key, turn, remove key, open door),

2) reach in and manually unlock the driver side rear door,

3) get in reach across and unlock the front passenger door,

4) reach across and back to unlock the rear passenger door,

5) get out and open the rear lift gate so the dog could get in the back (assuming he hadn't already jumped in one of the now open doors).

If it's raining at the time then you had to sprint ahead of the 'pack' and do all the above in about 2 seconds so the wife/kids didn't have to stand around getting wet while waiting on you. Of course if you're sprinting so is the dog who will inevitably jump into the driver's door as soon as it opens and track water/mud over everything - which then causes the wife/kids to blame you for having to sit on wet, dirty seats. :headbang:

Today we complain that we have to push a button on the remote twice from a distance of 50 feet to accomplish all that in about 1 second. :rofl2:

I love technology...

The dealer will not be able to allow you to roll the windows up remotely, as this feature is permanently disabled for all US models (Lexus too, in case you were wondering) and cannot be enabled even by the dealer. In fact, there is not even an option for it in TIS Techstream.

I am not sure on being able to change the units to metric.

It does not work on 2008-2013 Highlander because only the driver window has the Auto UP/Down feature which has the anti pinch sensor, the rest don't have this. I have a Lexus RX350 that has the Auto for all windows, in my Lexus I am able to open and close all the windows + the sunroof with the key. I think the reason that you see the feature in the Techstream is because both the Highlander and the RX350 share the same ECU the optio shows up in the Techstream but it does not work.
