Hi everyone. I've done a little searching around and I have not found any instructions on adding DRL to a 04 DBL Cab Tacoma. There are alot of mod info on 05 and up Taco DRL install, but I've come up empty for 04 and below.

Anyone know if its something that is easily done? Instructions hiding anywhere?

Thanks!!

Hey degull,
I recently imported an 04 Dbl-cab from Florida into Canada and had to enable DRLs. As you've undoubtedly found, there isn't an OEM-style DRL mod for the 01-04 Tacomas like there is for the 05+. The DRL option on the 01-04 models used a "black box" controller, a different fuse box and essentially a different wiring harness.

I used this aftermarket module (the DRL-1 Universal):
http://www.webelectricproducts.com/products.htm

It runs your turnsignals as DRLs (obviously still allowing them to flash as a normal turnsignal when needed). Installation was really straightforward and no problem passing the RIV inspection at Canadian Tire (assuming that's what you need to do).

Hi there. I'm importing a vehicle as well. Looking at the schematics for the US and Canadian Tacos, I was afraid the answer you gave was the only solution. Will checkout the DRL addon you linked.

Not a big deal, I was just hoping that it would be simple.

Did you have to do anything else to pass the RIV inspection? Air bag stickers etc?

Thanks a million.

I didn't need to do anything else for the RIV inspection. Turns out my truck already had the bilingual (English/French) air bag warning labels on the back of the sun visors... I was surprised figuring they would be English/Spanish. I had asked the dealer about labels and they just gave me photocopies... said Cdn Tire would accept them!

If you haven't already done so, make sure you email/fax your recall clearance letter to RIV so they will issue the Form 2 (which you need to take to Cdn Tire). The step-by-step instructions on the RIV website aren't very clear on this point... it indicates you need a recall clearance letter, but the requirement to send it to them is buried somewhere else on the website.

Get your DRLs working and you shouldn't have any trouble with the inspection.

Looks like you got the same truck I'm about to buy. Do you mind if ask what you got and how much did shell out for it?? How do you like it? Any pics of your new ride?

I imported a 07 Rav4 for my wife last month so I'm aware of the RIV process and you are right the website is a little vague. I called them and they were very helpful in explaining the process. The funny thing is that the airbag stickers on the 07 Rav4 we bought were in both French and English as well. I thought the requirement was stupid, and was very happy to find out that I didn't need to buy any stickers. If I'm lucky like you then hopefully the Taco I buy will have French/English stickers as well.

Thanks for the info!! And lets see some pics of that beast!!

Hey Degull,
I bought a 2004 PreRunner dbl cab from Florida with 22,000 miles on it... TRD, SR5 color-keyed package (Impulse Red), bed liner and hitch. It's in great shape and best of all, never seen a Canadian winter! I bought it from a dealer, certified used Toyota and paid $19,500 USD... totally lucked-out with the timing when I bought so it ended-up costing me $18,200 CDN (I converted money the day before the Canadian dollar went to it's record $1.10 USD).

So far, the truck's been fantastic (even with the winter we're having). I owned a 1995 Toyota 4wd ext cab before this one and used the 4wd about 2 times a year in the snow (mostly because I could, not because I really needed to). This year, I have a 2wd and we've been buried with snow... figures! Nevertheless, I've got good winter tires, weight in the bed and I don't drive like a moron, so I've had no trouble.

Good luck with your Tacoma... you won't be disappointed!

Just put a deposit on a Taco in Knoxville, TN. Will be picking it up in a couple of weeks. No DRL installed, so I guess I'll have to do some kind of DRL mod to pass the Federal inspection when I import it into Canada. I'm hoping that I can slave an aftermarket DRL controller in temporary and then chuck it when I'm done. If I could do a factory type install I'd leave it in.

If anyone knows of any instructions or parts needed to do a factory DRL mod to an 2004 DoubleCab Tacoma, I'd apprecaite it.

I can't wait to get my new ride!!!!

DRL's are a nuisance...unless of course you live in Canada where you'll be prosecuted if you don't have them...

Had them on a Subaru...at first I liked them...but grew to hate them. (You know how hard it is to run driving lights with your high-beams when you have DRL's??? It sucks...they never work right.)
