Dealer warned me no injector cleaners on 2.0

Stopped by dealer to stock up on some 0-16W oil figure ask the service department a question about injector cleaners. The guy said every 30k miles Toyota recommends their 3 stage injection cleaning. He continues to tell me the chemicals in regular injector cleaners are very harmful and can eventually damage internal parts. I really find this hard to believe. Is this a dealer tactic trying to sell me on their $250 Injection service when comes time? Every other car I've owned always used off the shelf injector cleaners never had issues always works.

In fact when I first bought my '07 in 2009 with 25k miles a few months later they tried to sell me the same $250 service said my injectors where badly clogged. Even though the car ran fine I bought a bottle of Valvoline Injector cleaner and it improved idling and MPG. I do this every 10k miles since never paid dealer to do anything just don't trust them.

I did that last month in the taco
No real noticeable difference, slightly disappointed 😞
Unless nothing needs cleaned in There idk!

Currently dumping lucas oil in the Corolla, seems to make a difference!? Maybe dirty to begin with, some hp gains acheived
Oh what a feeling!

Is that stuff you just drop into the fuel tank or is it more involved?

Your dealer is full of it

So, what 3 stage cleaner is your dealer recommending? Go get the details.... brand pn's... and in writing the TSB from Toyota that recommends it.

I recommend any PEA based cleaner added to the tank yearly.
The kid didn't know much details other then what was listed on the schedule mileage sheet he handed me. Before using off the shelf cleaners I just asked out of curiosity being a new car. I never take my vehicles to the dealer for anything other then warranty work.

That's one of the most common service offer by dealers... to pad the bill, as far as I'm concerned :p . I've never seen the item in a Toyota maintenance guide but sometimes on dealer's homemade maintenance list. Unless you feel there is a clogging problem - mainly cause by poor quality or debris contaminated gas, in which case dismantling and ultrasonic cleaning is the thing to do. If so, we're not talking maintenance here, but fixing an avoidable problem.. Gas, nowadays, is generally of higher quality than in "the good old time" and already contains additives (may vary according to areas or marketing in US but mandatory in Canada). As far as "treatment in a bottle", it's rather a matter of personal faith on what good or bad they can do...

It's easy to demonstrate the lie in the second sentence. Get out the booklet that contains your maintenance schedule, which is actually WHAT TOYOTA SAYS. The rest is mostly dealer money grab.

But if you're going to a Toyota dealer to buy the oil you're going to install at home, I guess they figure you're a good candidate for an upsell. I have never before heard of anyone doing that, and can't imagine why you would.

How does that good gas prevent that carbon blowby buildup in the air intake or whatever it's called
Somebody n the 7th gen Corolla section posted up a pic of his opened up with all that slimey looking stuff build up inside... 200k+ miles
I was thinking about opening my car up to see if it's the same inside and maybe experiment for s and g

I have also heard that an italian tune-up will also burn off all that blowby?

The dealership that sold my wife her Rogue tried to get her to rotate tires every 5k miles. Closing in on 5 years and 48,000 miles the tires are wearing evenly with one rotation by me and no rebalance. It still rides like new and I used to give them a piece of paper with every measurement of every groove of all 4 tires and it never got to 2/32nds difference in depth until close to 40k miles, then I rotated them so she would have the best on the front, They had been on the rear when she bought her car.
I measured them tonight and the outer groove is at 4/32nds. the middle is generally at 5/32nds and the inner groove is at 6/32nds with a couple close to 732nds. That is a single front to rear same side rotation. She would not let me put 40 PSI in the damn tires or the centers would be even with the average of the edges, and there would be more at the edges.
So far they have done 9 oil changes and 5 state inspections washed her car while she gets a manicure (pre covid) or we got to lunch or kill time some other way. The tires will last another 10k miles but be useless on snow. (we would just drive another car with better tires). They offer free oil changes and state inspections for life and powertrain for life (just in case she keeps it until the CVT craps out) Hasn't kept one that long so far in 31 years. Used to drive my rebuilt total Altimas.

Fuel Treatment (lucasoil.com)

A powerful blend of oils and additives that contain no SOLVENTS. Designed to increase power and fuel mileage and also lower exhaust emissions through a more complete combustion.

Lucas Fuel Treatment is formulated for both gasoline and diesel engines, carbureted or fuel injected. It gives your fuel system what it really needs - a blend of super slick oils and additives with a high detergent action that allows the engine to operate at maximum efficiency. Also, it cleans and lubricates the carburetor and injectors and causes the fuel to burn more thoroughly for increased power and less fuel consumption. Lucas Fuel Treatment should definitely be used in vehicles that require leaded fuel because it actually replaces the benefits of lead in gasoline without causing harmful emissions. Use it to pass smog tests.

fuel injectors are pricey!
my tacoma's injectors list price US$225 * 6 = US$1350
+ whatever the heck time they tell me it takes to get to them, remove, replace, reassemble stuff taken off, test, cleanup yada yada yada
crystal ball tells me that invoice is going to be quite close to US$2000 ...if not more

the guy in the video a couple posts back says injectors often go out between 200k and 300k miles?

That "injector cleaner" stuff will usually not hurt any engine. Because it is really not effective in any way, doesn't clean....doesn't damage....it's so diluted in a full tank of fuel.

The rich oil companies love that some people become so loyal to their product claims. Heck, I know people who buy new cars every 2-3 years and STILL faithfully buy hundred's of dollars (if not a thousand) of specialty petrochemical products on a vehicle they'll never keep anywhere near long enough to realize the promised benefits of the spendy products they put in their tanks.

I put 300K miles on a 5th Gen 3.5 V6 Maxima feeding it the cheapest brand of fuel (but used premium for max power/mpgs) and that car, in that entire time, ran perfectly except for a bad cam sensor at 192K and a failed door lock motor at 297K. Also only used regular dino oil in it. The only thing I did was use quality oil filters and regular fluid changes (on an extended schedule, however).

My Nissan Titan is 15 years old soon, it too has been treated the same as the Maxima....I even dump old fuel that is beginning to smell varnished from my lawn equipment and boat into it. Seems to love it, actually!

So Toyota is telling you to not use Chevron gas, which has techron in it, OR are they telling you to not buy techron unless it is in the fuel you buy. The fallacy of that "logic" should be as apparent as the lack of honesty in a political speech.
But it is OK to PAY OUT THE ASS for the stealership to run THEIR injector cleaner through your engine.
I guess both of my Toyotas should be dead on the side of the road, because I used techron in them, versus paying the stealership to clean them and get rid of the P0171 code. It's so ludicrous it's laughable.
MY crap is fine, your crap is dangerous, reminds me of curbside pharmacist's claims.

This will clean the carbon off the pistons. EPR from BG. You dump it into your oil before you do an oil change. Run the engine for 10 minutes at idle, and then drain the oil. Do not drive with the product in the engine.

+1 for the Italian tune-up from within that video
Ran the taco out on the open smooth freeway just a bit ago, 93mph in 5th gear for a mile or so should suffice, I was following a tundra with Texas plates!
Nearly 194k miles after 24 years and I really think it runs near-like-new for the most part
I like this sport taco :geek:

Injectors will eventually clog over time. My set has 140k on my 9th gen. I've used qt, circle k, costco, mobil, chevron, and fry's.

The way I know my fuel is bad is when I smell the by product in the cabin. That tells me, the tank I just filled with isn't bad, just more vapors after the combustion and out the exhaust.

Your port and direct injection helps with carbon. Whilst my speed 3 is only direct injection. I don't have fuel washing over the valves to keep them clean.

You do what's best for your car.

ur injectors went out at 140k miles? it seems pretty early, they should last longer than that assuming we don't pump bad gas?

My old 06 Corolla which my kid drives now with about 360000km has never had any injector cleaner added.
Runs fine.

He is a liar and not to be trusted. The main ingredient in modern fuel injector cleaners are very very specific amines used in small amounts with most of the can being "carrier" fluids like kerosene. Amines can be dangerous if the concentration is too high or the wrong ones are used. Amines are found in the food we eat and beverages we drink and every bottle or motor oil you will ever put into your engine and ATF's.

The other thing used to clean mechanical parts in the vehicle and out are high energy solvents like naphtha as an example. Like most things the dosage and type being used is important. Some materials for example can be cleaned with naphtha with no issues and some will begin to degrade. Naphtha is not bad or evil it comes down to knowing how to use it properly.

Did you know if you drink too much water it will kill you but most people do not go around cautioning people about drinking safe clean water.

I guarantee you that their "3 Stage" cleaning process using's a variety of solvents, petroleum distillates and amines.

This guy is speaking 1/2 truths and using fear and authority as an "expert" to rope you in and lighten your wallet.

Toyota does not have a 3 Stage cleaning system. As to see the machine and see who's name is on the machine and who is making the cleaning chemicals!

Toyota for decades offered a in tank fuel system cleaner that came in a silver gray metal can. Tiny can super concentrated one can would be used any Toyota even with the largest fuel tank. I bought it for close to 20 years. My local Toyota Dealership now uses mostly "Prestone Professional Chemicals" and yes they have a transmission flush, coolant flush and injector cleaning service but they do not sell it as "Toyota".
