Know what? The number on the volume display goes up and down even when no sound is being played. Seems like dB and display numbers are not directly correlated.

Yep, there is no correlation. Program source, AM/FM/XM, and even different channels will vary. MP3s from your phone/iPod are even more "all over the place"
