I am trying to find the best model for the best price for a head unit. I am looking at the Kenwood DNR7100.

What I am looking for is a double din HU that has GPS, play cd/dvd's, am/fm stereo. I will only be replacing the HU and not the speakers. I definately want the built in hard drive for the navigation. I would also like the idea of being able to play music from an MP3 player.

What all will I need to install this? I know I need the scosche kit for the double din and pigtail. Anything else? Any opinions on this reciever or any other recomendations?

I believe I have the JBL speakers. How can I tell for sure? It is a TRD Sport.

Also, is there a harness I need for the steering wheel controls?

And you are gonna be looking to spend at least $1700 for the Z2 brand new. You could go to eBay, but its not much cheaper. That said, its is an amazing unit. Lots of neat features, and later on when you do decide to work on the system a bit, you will have the headunit to control it.

I purchased a NIB (new in box) AVIC Z2 about a month ago from one of a zillion ebay/online retailers for $980 shipped. In fact, I pieced together NIB backup cam ($150), NIB XM/T tuner ($160), the Scosche JBL harness ($99) and double-din dash kit ($35) plus misc electrical connectors ($30) ... all for about $1,500. :smokin:

I've been researching this a bit for my new 08 Taco as well. I've settled (though not yet bought) on the Kenwood 8120. The navigation seemed like a waste to me on all these big screen head units b/c I have a Garmin Nuvi and love the interface. I mainly want the back-up camera capabilty, and Ipod/Iphone integration.

However, I'm having my Compustar alarm installed on Thursday and the dealer is an Eclipse and Kewood dealer and he suggested I check out the 8120. I'm a pilot and have always liked the Garmin User Interface for both pro aviation and consumer automotive products. its easy to use and rarely gets you lost IMO. Kenwood uses this Garmin interface. So, if you've used any of their Nuvi products, the screen and menus are pretty much the same (except on a 7" screen instead of a 2.5" screen).

It also has built-in bluetooth (I believe the 7100 can do this, but with an add on adapter-more $$), and of course, mp3 integration. It also can use universal cameras (an issue with the Eclipse: you can only use Eclipse's camera). I think the Pioneer is also universal, but not sure...maybe a Pioneer guy can chime in.

They are expecting to ship these new units in the 2nd week of April, I believe. My dealer hasn't not received them yet.

If you're interested, I found a guy on another forum, who is offering a deal for $1280 (they MSRP at 1900 and I think most dealers are selling at 1600). I've emailed it to my dealer to see if he wants to match it.

Still a little pricey, but for the money I was spending on any of the other HU's, I'd rather have that big screen Garmin in one unit...as opposed to having GPS on the HU (which I wouldnt' use) AND the NUVI up on the windshield.

I know a lot of guys are happy with the Eclipse, Pioneer and other units...I think all of them will do what you want. Just a matter of preference with the menu's and such. I'm just a Garmin snob. :D

Good luck...I'd be interested to know what you decide.

Compustar is being installed on Thursday. A much wiser Taco elder once said the alarm is the first thing that should be done. Having that said, and my car HAS been broken into here in New Jersey (had my Garmin unit lifted), I'm not going to let the fear of theft stop me from having what I want in a car I've waited years to have.

Do all you can to prevent theft (alarm, good parking location choices, move out of the hood) and enjoy ALL your toys in your truck, not just your radio.

Go for it!

Alpine! Alpine Amp/Speakers/Sub! much cheaper and works soooo nicely with the iPOD - i went from the JBL-system to an Alpine w/4Channel Amp + 10" Alpine sub behind the back seat + kept the steering controls === spent about 800 and its the difference is night and day - i love driving my truck around now !

Love my kenwood 7100... it does everything you are looking for. I wish the graphics for the garmin nav were better but that is my only complaint.
