Note: If you find this helpful please use the thanks button under this post.

I searched and could not find any straight out directions with pictures so here it is!

Needed:
Small amount of time
Wire snips
Electric Tape

If you wish to do the independent fog light mod you will also need:
10MM Ratchet or Socket
Wire strippers
Grounding connector (U or O shaped thing that connects to the wire for a ground)

1st we need to remove the lower glove box. Instructions and pictures may be found in your owners manual on p. 344. But it is very simple just disconnect the damper. (The hydraulic looking arm just slides off.) Then squeeze around the top of the glove box and pull down then out. Ta Da!

You will see a white connector with many wires attached to it as in the pictures below.
The numbers are referenced as
[1]
[2]
[3] [12]
[4] [13]
[5] [15]
etc etc
etc etc
etc etc

The two important ones are fog lights ([4] white) and (DRL [12] blue)

MAKE SURE THE IGNITION IS OFF AND KEY REMOVED!

Disable DRL / Autolights Directions

1. Unplug the connector. (Just squeeze white tab and pull)
2. Snip the blue wire at pin [12] about half way between tape and connector. 12 is on the top of the right column of wire.
3. Wrap electric tape around both ends so that they cannot connect or ground to anything.
Ta da! No more DRL / Autolights

Independent Fog Lights Directions (Make sure fog lights are off)
Note: There will be no warning buzz if you leave the fog lights on when exiting the vehicle. However the headlight buzz still works.
1. Unplug the connector. (Just squeeze white tab and pull)
2. Snip the white wire at pin [4] about 1.5 inches from connection.
3. Pull the white wire from the bundle by pulling it from the top. (This gives you more length to ground)
4. Strip a small amount of wire and crimp whatever you will be using to ground the wire.
5. Ground wire. (I back out the 10mm bolt to the left of the connector, grounded connection, and tightened it back up.
Ta da! You now have full control of your fog lights!

EDIT: You may also use a wire tap and run it to a ground and you will not have to cut the white wire.

Now test everything out to make sure it is working properly and reassemble your glove box.

Here are some pictures. Sorry I didn't get any before pictures, but I about forgot the pictures all together.

Here is the blue wire after snip and tape.

EDIT: ANOTHER METHOD TO CONSIDER

T-SB-0216-10 covers disabling the running lights. It's very easy to do, the connector E91 is behind the glove box. Snip and tape the small blue wire at pin #12 and tape both ends. ( snip it an inch back from the connector in case you want to splice it back together again ). If you want to just disable the "auto" headlight on function only, don't snip the #12 wire that disables the DRL function, snip the small grey wire at pin #20. That'll make the light sensor inoperative and you can turn the headlights on and off with the stalk switch like normal. Again, tape the wire ends and leave enough wire to splice it back together should you want to. The TSB link is below:
http://alflash.com.ua/Refer/T-SB-0216-10_daytime_dis.pdf

Cutting the blue #12 wire will disable both DRL and auto lights. Cutting the grey #20 wire will still allow DRL to function with auto lights disabled. It's just an alternative to unplugging the sensor. (Easier IMO, even though I haven't tried this.)
Open the coin tray.
Squeeze the sides in for the coin tray and it'll drop down more
Pull the tray straight out.
Then pull out the whole panel and remove the connectors from the mirror controls.
Then you have access to the switch blanks and they just pop out by squeezing the tabs

The diagram below is pretty straight forward.
You'll need:
Switch
relay (4 Pin or 5 pin is fine Doesnt matter)
4 female spade connectors (to connect to the relay pins)
15 amp fuse and fuse holder
18 to 24 Gauge wire
Get everything above and I'll walk you through it yeah?

Correct. I simply got my own wires and connected the ends to the blue DRL wire (to extend it) and ran it all the way across the dash to the switch panel.
This should be in the first post as well IMO Greg. I would think most people want their fogs to turn off automatically when the car is off. (Not possible with grounding fog wire alone.) An important note to make before turning on the power to test, is that the relay MUST be grounded. The blue and white wires connected to the relay MUST be hooked up correctly so that they do not run against each other and short circuit. (ie. 87 and 30, or 85 and 86) I did this and blew a fuse, but another member apparently FUBAR'd his car completely. Set it up exactly as Shft's diagram suggests. Lastly, 87a is not used if you have a 5-pin relay.
Correct. I simply got my own wires and connected the ends to the blue DRL wire (to extend it) and ran it all the way across the dash to the switch panel.

Do you really have to disconnect the fog lights or can you just splice in a ground?

#8 ·
question.. can you still have the DRL on.. but if you ever wanted to turn your secondary lights.. the secondary and your fogs will turn on.. and your DRL will turn off...

can you do that? :) thanks in advance!

#9 ·
Yeah. You either leave everything as is and just always leave the foglight switch on or you do the foglight mod.

#11 ·
i was thinking... is the parking lights in the bundle of wires? cant i just splice that with the fog lights and it'll do the same?

#13 ·
oh yes. isnt one of the wires that are in the bundle of wires ground? thanks in advance?

#17 ·
hmm... do i really need to cut the drl? can i just ground the the wire?

sorry for the questions!
thank you!!

I didnt want to cut my DRL wire either, so Ive been looking around for a small in-line switch that I could just stick in there. Ive never seen one before but they must make one.

Or you could even just cut the wire and put male and female quick disconnect terminals on there so you can easily reconnect them whenever you want. Just make sure when theyre disconnected that theyre properly shielded so they dont make contact with anything else.

As for the fog lights, you can simply splice in a ground wire. They make a quick splice connector that you crimp into the middle of the wire and then it has a spot for a male QD terminal which is then easily removable if you ever needed to disconnect it.

Also, the way I did it, I put a male and female connector on each end in case you ever want to put them back together (in places where DRLs are needed to pass inspection) or if when you sell the car, the person wants them.

**** edit:: I didn't read the whole thread before posting this and then I noticed someone already mentioned it with a pic.

quote=Shft99;2925744]Im thinking you could just get a normal rocker switch from radioshack/wherever, wire it to the two cut ends of the blue wire (DRL), run the wires all the way across to where the mirror controls are and install the switch there. Wonder if that would work :p[/quote]

You would still have to cut the wire to install the switch. What i did was get a push button switch and wired that in to where you cut the blue wire then installed it in the upper right hand corner of upper glove box.. looks real nice...charging up battries for camera then will take pics of this and the relay wiring for fog lights

Here is the pic of the switch i put in the upper glove box for drl/auto lamp...switch in works just like factory..switch out no drl/auto lamps...

here is the relay and fuse i wired in for fog lights to come on with key on only(no worries bout leaving them on and running down bat.)

i used a 4 pin relay from radio shack or parts store

pin 85 is 12v from blue wire cut from drls on harness side (ran through fuse) red wire on relay..also ran wire to the switch for drls through fuse also

pin 86 is ground from chassis

pin 30 is jumper from pin 86

pin 87 is white wire cut for fogs on harness side

Using the relay, to prevent yourself from leaving the fogs on when the car is off, is a great idea and very suggested.

However, back when I first modded the fogs, I accidentally left them on all day long while taking my kids to Dutch Wonderland. I am happy to report that the car started right back up when I got to it. Approximately, 6.5 hours later. :)

Turning my fogs off is now a habit and I do it immediately upon shutting my car off now. I am still going to wire the relay though, just for safe measure.

nice work. i did this mod on my vibe which worked out the same =D i tapped my fog light wire to the turn signal so at least it'll warn me if i forget to turn it off. i was thinking about just grounding it but i might forget to turn it off since it'll still stay on when engine is off =/

Just to be sure and not screw up anything, Is this right? Or fuse and switch reverse positions? :ugh3:

Image
thanks for the diagram didnt know how to put one up...this is a great diagram but not totaly correct..pin 85 need to come directly out of fuse or you will just power rely with drl switch on also from switch wire needs to go back to blue wire on pin (not harness side) to get drls to work with switch closed tried to show what it should look like if you want to fix your diagram that would be great

I just bought OEM Fog lamps from Toyota, a pair of lights(bulbs), a pair of plastic frames(Made in Japan) and a relay.
The Toyota dude told me that my Rolla comes prewired for fog lamps, I just want to know of I can DIY easily like ''plug and play'' or it still need electrician skills? (connectors in the dash board...)
