Just when you thought it could not get any ugly, this document put Toyota in a huge trouble for boasting about saving $100 million dollars in recall costs. Now Akio Toyoda has done an about turn on not showing up in the congress to face heavy questioning and officially announced Akio Toyoda himself will now testify in the congress.

Now all the publicity of the "Kazein" concept Toyota came up is beginning to make sense.

Sad to say, this could scar Toyota's rep in the long run if the document is legit. I would like to see how it actually reads myself, but I will say I don't think it's being misinterpreted. Companies put money before all else and some are smarter about it than others. And Toyota misjudged big time on what was accepted cost cutting, and got caught it would appear.

The part I find most entertaining is the denial by some of the people here who will defend Toyota regardless of the situation. How can anyone be so brand loyal? Hell, I love my GMC but I was the first to admit GM had some serious issues (and still does).

The NHTSA does have the final say and didn't have to "buy" off on it if it didn't feel it was a safe or effective solution to a safety issue. Toyota can recommend/lobby whatever they wish, the bottom line is the NHTSA bought off on it.

This stuff makes me wonder.
I only have about 16,000 miles on my Corolla, and no mechanical problems. But the Toyota carpet floor matt's were totally worn through at 9,000 miles. If they skimp on something as small as floor matts, which were a $100 option (much more expensive than better quality after-market options), what about other things on the car?
I bought Toyota because they claim, themselves, to be better. But the more I see, the more scared I get.

This is getting ridiculous. Hopefully when Mr. Toyoda is in front of Congress, he is truthful (admit they have problems), and they REALLY make changes. They need to take a lesson from GM: don't f--k with the consumer.

This is exactly the type of hysteria that the media wants you to feel. The whole investigation is political grandstanding by the Government, or rather certain parties who are looking towards the November elections. People ask if people really believe Toyota cares about teh consumer? Well, do you really think the government gives a shit about you? No way they do.

Doesn't anyone find it funny that Toyota is "bragging" about saving money but it was OUR F'ing GOVERNMENT that okayed everything. Now OUR F'ING GOVERNMENT is investigating itself.

Sadly, this type of media frenzy, stupidity on our Government, etc..this is why the US is slowly slipping and in 25 or 30 years will no longer be a world power.

You mean... how Toyota conveniently fixed the 2010 Prius brake issue after a certain point, and said the cars that were experiencing the problems (which are now recalled), were ok?
Obviously, they weren't ok, because their recalled! Besides, if Toyota fixed the issue after a certain point, that means Toyota knew there was a problem, and knew exactly how to fix it. They didn't need to "research" a solution.

How long did Toyota know about the accelerator issue before issuing the recall?
MILLIONS of Toyota vehicles recalled in just a period of a few months.
I don't think the term here is "brain washing," at least when referring to what the news is doing. Not any more.
It would seem "Toyota quality" is being shown to be more brain washing than anything else.

I can't really say I'd be able to recommend a Toyota product to anyone right now. Not for a few years, to see how things go, how Toyota REALLY recovers from this.
I understand every vehicle manufacturer has it's problems, but saying covering up recalls and avoiding recalls are a multi-million dollar savings WIN on an internal document? How can you trust a company that does that?
You can't, and you'd be a fool to.

I know the actual complaint I have on my Corolla (as of right now), is small, but that small stuff still gets to me. I work hard for my money. And if a company is willing to skip on the small stuff, how in the world can you trust them with bigger stuff?

Again, not brain washed by anything. I believe Toyota's recent history and this internal document more than talk for themselves.

I agree that I want to know the truth and if Toyota was (is) wrong, then so be it. But I am so distrusting of the US Government that for me, no matter what they say I think they're full of crap...that is my opinion.

I find if funny that men and woman who make a living lying and covering up for political gain are now after Toyota for doing the same thing. IT would be like me condemning a man for sleeping around on his wife and doing it from my mistresses bedroom....

The recall for the floormats shouldnt have happened in the first place. If the floor mats are installed properly, there isnt a problem.
You cant blame Toyota for peoples' stupidity.

Sounds like you could make the arguement that the NHTSA is just as at fault as Toyota. I personally think that a criminal investigation is a bit much. I didnt see them doing the same when Ford had 9 million vehicles recalled for the faulty cruise control switch or for the tread delamination on the Firestone tires.

I want to know two things as well... who did Toyota pay off, and how much. The more I thought about it, the more it stunk of a payoff somewhere between Toyota and NHTSA. I'm sure with the general disdain for politicians lately, this will not go unnoticed.

Watanabe needs to be thrown in jail for the rest of his life for royally f'ing up Toyota.

It was my impression that Fujio Cho was the one that greenlighted the massive growth, then handed over the reigns to Watanabe who kicked into high gear. I have no clue about Inaba. But Watanabe SHOULD at least be in these Congressional hearings. It was his party that Toyoda is cleaning up after.

Where does Jim Lentz play into this? Was he unable to perform some duties due to not being greenlighted by World HQ? Was there a communication break down?
