The way to get your check engine light to blink out an error code is to connect terminals TE1 and E1 together. Most use a paperclip because it is easy and everyone has one. Note that you can use just about anything to connect the two terminals together, in my link above I showed how a made a very nice one out of a pair of Toyota wire harness repair parts as a replica of the SST the manual talks about.
