Does anyone know where to get a thrid brakelight with a bed light in it?

Like the one pictured.
The tacoma I have has only the red brake light. I was unloading the truck last night in the dark and it would have been real handy.
I don't know if one is available from the factory or can one be bought aftermarket, but I would really like one.

Thanks In Advance for any information.

I hadn't thought about it until just now, but putting an extra switch on the high brake light could at least be a half-assed solution - red light penetrates the dark quite well (I often put a foot on the brakes when backing up, as the red lights help a lot with rear vision.) That could be a fairly easy and cheap mod, especially if your truck isn't loaded leaving you with a blank or two in the dash - a factory fog light switch could be used, although it would suck to have two switches labeled the same trying to remember which is which. You may have just picked me a weekend project :chug:

That sounds like a good solution at this point. Some light is needed back there.

If I can think of any other possible options I will post. If anyone else has any ideas please do the same.

I don't know about the brake light but I remember seeing a thread a few months ago where someone installed rectangular fog lights in the holes above the fender wells inside the bed. It sure looked neat. I think toyota really dropped the ball on this cargo light.

there's a post with a guy who did his own bedlights.

i really like the way he triggered it (switch for on, off or, on with tailgate open) but i didn't really like the way the lights were setup.
Ouch dude that hurts. ^ :sosad:

I use the bedlights quite a lot, but they are a little too bright, to be honest.

Maybe I'll work on a 3rd brake light mod this week.

haha sorry man, nothing personal, i really like the way you had it triggered, and i'm definitely copying that setup. i stuck some lights in the cubby holes just to see what it would look like, they either glared up at me too much or didn't light the entire bed. maybe the lights i used were too bright.

All I know is that whoever the engineer was that was in charge of the rear brake light should be fired on the spot.

No explanation needed.

that and the guy who made the 20,000$ base model with no intermittent wipers :disappoin

I noticed this the first week i had the truck. It pissed me off. You pay 20-30 grand for a damn pickup and cant even get a cheap light to light the bed. I will definately but an aftermarket light setup if it ever comes out. Well i just thought of something. Does anyone know hoe many bulbs are in it? Maybe if it has one bulb u could just get a different cover thing. You could wire that light to a switch somehow. Then when u hit the switch you would have a white light and red on both ends? Just a suggestion.

For those thinking of getting a tonneau cover... my Undercover came with a 3 LED light that's attached underneath near the pull strap at the back. But yes, I agree, it seems like such an obvious thing to have (a factory bed light) that it should be a given that it's there. I never even thought to look. And I haven't had the thing long enough to even have had the need to use the bed at night. THANK YOU Undercover!

I've only had mine for around a week and a half.

I just happen to be helping a friend move last weekend, and it went well into the night. Unloading a bunch of someone elses stuff in the dark wasn't fun.

It was all the little stuff. We moved the big stuff first thing in the morning.:thumbdown

I am considering some DIY mods, but I really wish some aftermarket company chimes in before I have to.

Ok i just went out and inspected my truck and there are three bulbs. So if you could find a light cover with red on both ends and a clear part in the middle pointing towards the bed and then come up with a mod so when u hit a switch just the high brake light will come on the problem will be solved haha :whatwhat: . What would be even cooler is if you could wire out that middle light bulb only to work when you flip the switch. So then when u hit the brakes, just the two outside bulbs would light up. You would then officially be pimped :smokin: .

Why would you want to go through the hassles of trying to isolate one of the stock brake light bulbs (requires digging into the wiring harness if you want to install an in-line switch) when it seems like it would be easier to simply wire in an aftermarket light? That way you could mount it where ever in the bed you wanted and use a switch mounted where ever you wanted. If somebody is wanting to "mod" this it seems y'all are going about it the hard way.

I personally would mount several small lights around under the rail, run the wires straight to the battery and install an in-line fuse and a switch in the bed and forget about it.

Here's another, simpler option from Cabela's...

I'm not sure these would be so good.
  1. Ad reads "Ideal for use with tonneau covers or bed caps." Doesn't mention whether or not they're waterproof. Chances are they're not.
  2. Ad reads "Quickly attaches under the bed rail with powerful encased magnets, durable double-sided VHB tape, or hook and loop, for carpeted bed liners." Magnets wouldn't work since our beds are PLASTIC. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want to tape anything to my PLASTIC truck bed with double-sided tape.
  3. Don't like the fact that they run on batteries.
Just my .02.

+1. I'd rather just use a flashlight :)

I just found a thread with an aftermarket option:

Not for a few more months though :sosad:

Has anyone checked the size/ fit of the Tundra 3rd Brakelight?

I've been looking for one on ebay that I could buy, but none to be had.
