Does your Highlander drip?

My '07 always seems to be dripping water below the engine. I know it is probably condensation; however, I have never had a vehicle drop this much.

Those that are experiencing the dripping, which mode is the HVAC in? If you have it on windshield vents (or windshield & feet) then the A/C IS running. Just to be definitive, the air conditioning runs when the windshield vent is being used, and NO, the A/C will not go on, even though it is running. The manual is very lacking in info about this.

Disclaimer: it might be different if you have an automatic HVAC controls... you MIGHT be able to turn off the A/C, but I'm not sure.

I absolutely despise this setup. But that is how Toyota (and other manufacturers) has been doing it for years. My '99 4Runner was this way, my '05 Highlander and my '07 Camry.

never had to mess with a toyota a/c system as far as reprogramming it.. but on my honda s2000 i can turn my a/c on and off even if it is on vent.. because most manufactures let u reprogram it to disable the auto a/c with vent feature..

not sure how toyotas is done. if it is possible.. but i was able to change the settings with just pressing a few buttons on the a/c control.. it changes it forever till i change it back

I notice dripping from time to time, but today there was quite a bit. We do use windshield vents--I assume that's the "front defrost" button which blows nice, cool air up onto the windshield and the rest of the car...I didn't know that the A/C was operating, as the light for A/C doesn't come on......??

Anyway, I crawled underneath, and noticed the liquid (Water, I think...didn't smell or taste like gas!) was dripping from a small black hose that didn't appear to hook up to anything nearby....is that the A/C condensation drain???

Yes, that would be the condensate drain. Yes the AC is on anytime any of the two defrost modes is selected and the AC light will not light up, but I can feel the AC come on and hear it when driving at low speeds. The more humid the air is outside, the more condensate there will be, even in recirc mode.

Funny how ironic this is. got a "call cell" text from my wife.

Guess what - she noticed something dripping from the HL today (turns out it is exactly as discussed above) - it's very humid here & first hot day, so used A/C actually, on non-recirc. Just funy that this thread from 2007 re-surfaces same day as that call from spouse

If you run the A/C system on "recirculate", you'll likely have less condensate dripping from below, as you would be reusing already dried air. You'll also have colder air output, and that is why one should use recirc in really hot, humid weather. If cabin starts to develop a stale smell, take it off recirc. Be glad it's dripping, as the alternative is having the drain clog up with goop and then when you go around turn, you might have condendate spilling onto the carpeting. You then have to unclog your drain - a sometimes difficult proposition.

Every air conditioner is also by design a dehumidifier. Water coming out of the air is routed out of the car's interior evaporator coil to the outside via the rubber tubing hanging off the bottom of the car.

Anytime you see fluids leaking out from the bottom of the car its good to check to see that its only water as opposed to trans, PS, brake, oil, etc, fluids. Easy to do with a finger or with a bit of paper towel if you are a neatnik : )
