Don't fill up your tank quickly?

I got a forward today, one of the "tips and tricks to save gas" type things. But there are two on here that I'd never seen before. I googled and couldn't find anything really...but they sort of make logical sense. Any ideas?

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast

mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low,

middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby

minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at

the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of

the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being

sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less

worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF

FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your

tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster

than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating

roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the

atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here

where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that

every gallon is actually the exact amount.

same here. Very rarely do i ever fill up in the daytime beacause i never get around to filling up during the day. I seem to fill it up whenever i get off of work, which is usually at night

You'll probably save more by not dripping those renegade 3 drips down the side of your car, and making sure they go into the filler. Then put the cap on asap to prevent the precious vapors from escaping!

They are probably right but the .00x% of gas you're loosing to vapor is probably a joke. An amount someone like my Chemistry Professor Uncle would calculate and think was a big deal. Setting your idle a whole 20 or 30 rpm below the factory recommended level would probably make a bigger deal.

Also very true, but I always shake before I'm done ;)

i usually just lift the hose up a bit to get the last few drops when im finish. The pumps around here have alot of extra hose that hangs down and almost touches the ground. Your paying for all that precious gas and it just stays in the tube!

anyways the best way to save money on gas is to buy a damn smart car and syphon your gas.

In California gas hoses are allowed to hold 1/2gal of gas per the Dept. of Agricultural Weights and Measures. That means when you pump 91 octane.... if the person before you pumped 87.... you are probably getting up to 1/2gal of 87. I dunno if other states are the same.... but I'm sure it's close.

one of the tings you listed I have heard about also. Half fill your tank to keep weight down and the car does not pull more weight do it saves gas. Another is shift fast with a manual transmission try to get to the last gear by skipping gears. And drive and shift at lower rpms so your engine does not work as hard.
