Drain Plugs?

I took my SE in for its 5K service to today and asked the service manager about the package of rubber plugs that I found in the glove compartment. He said that they are used to plug drain holes in the underbody. Some customers want the holes plugged and some don't. With that said, he just left it up to me. I chose to not have them installed.

Does anybody out there know more about these mysterious drain holes? Any suggestions about plugging / not plugging?

(I got a great photo of the plugs, but I don't think us cheapo free membership types can insert photos.)

If you type in the wording found on the package, a million threads come up. Some people go ballistic about the dealer not properly prepping the car, others say they dont matter, others install themselves, others say dealers put them in at first service.

I put them in myself. I figure if Toyota thought it was best without them, they'd save the $.10 instead of including them.

08 Install rubber body plugs (Stored in glove box or center
console)*

Number 8 as seen during the pre delivery, its part of the pdi to be done.

even my own cars have not had them installed, I didn't care but thats poor workmanship on the employee.

these body plugs run usually along the unibody frame rails and are used to fill the hole for tie-down locations during transport. other body plugs are open to the interior of the vehicle and will keep water/outside debris out.

Got my car tonight and none of them were installed. Still in the glove box. I will be happy to put them on, just need to know where they go.

Question withdrawn based on my own stupidity...

Crawled under the car and looked. Duh!

The front ones are on the frame rail. The rear ones are between the frame rail and the door towards the outside of the car. Still wonder how they missed that prepping the car, but hey, no biggle.

I asked this same question 3 years ago when I got my '09 Venza and again when I recently picked up my '12 Camry. I had my Venza checked and the plugs were in. The service manager told me that they are installed at the port in Jacksonville (I am in the Tampa Bay area) and the plugs in the glove box are extra, replacement plugs should your vehicle end up getting flooded since the plugs that are in place would need to be removed to allow the vehicle to drain. I got the same response a few hours ago when I inquired about my Camry.

My bet is that those four plugs are the ones not installed at the factory on purpose to plug the four holes used to hold the vehicle down during transport. The are NOT drain plugs but plugs to prevent road water and salt from getting into the space between the bottom of the car and the floor pan. They should have been installed as part of the dealer prep for the car. Go back to the dealer and ask that they be installed or install them yourself.

drain plugs for the frame?
what they planning to drain out of hollow frame?
:)

Curious where they are located.

Also, I wonder why Toyota doesn't install them at the factory, is it a time/cost savings issue?
if you"ll look under your car, on the uni frame side members right behind front wheels and before rear wheels you'll see oval openings.
they used to secure car on the transport.
before installing these plugs, make sure inside of the frame is dry if not let it dry first.
than use spay lubricant and spray inside of the frame to prevent rust.
second, use thick grease to lubricate openings in the frame and sides of the plug too. this will keep frame completely sealed and protected from moister.

Here is what I posted on the Hybrid threads

These body plugs are intentionally left out because the holes are where the tie downs go when the vehicle is shipped. The dealer is responsible for putting them back in.
Which I hardly ever see.
Very easy to put in your self. Just have to crawl under the car a little bit.
By all means, put them in. I have made comments here as to why some owners have mice problems getting into their car.
These holes are an easy access for rodents to get into the interior. I've proved the stoppage to many of my customers by installing them. And just as much, I like to help out my TN members also.

Thanks TECH1984 I found the holes for the rubber plugs and installed them. The package info is confusing stating the: Insert these rubber plugs into the holes of the center floor side members extensions.
Actually the holes are located on the frame a foot in and behind the front tires and in front of the rear tires.

Here are the before and after pictures:

or click on camera by my name on the left..

Also the pre-check list clearly states to put in the plugs but the person at Gulf States did not check it. Along with a few other things not checked??

Thanks

plugs

Working at TMMK for 18 yrs never have I seen hole plugs not being installed before the car left the plant. The holes they cover are needed in paint and to allow the sealer/ED to drain out of the cab after being dipped. Also to allow the cleaner/prep to drain before being sprayed. We cover them all. My 2012 SE didint have any in the glove box.

you probably talking about rubber round plugs which plug holes in the floor, right under front and rear floor mats.
I never seen a car without them either.
we talking about oval plugs which plug oval holes in the frame.
today I've checked my neighbors 2011 LE -no plugs...
