i have a 2001 tacoma 2.7L 4x4 MT wo diff lock or ABS. in the past 2 months i been hearing a clicking (just one click then it is gone) noise only when i start off forward and backwards about 8/10 times. do not hear it when driving only on starts or if you leve it in gear and rock the tire. the sound it not getting worst. it sounds like a bad u joint but i have checked and replaced them.. a good friend of mine checked and it seem he thinks it is in the Transfer case (he is a Toyota mech and well trusted and it was not at Toyota but on his own time) and not sure wat it could be inside maybe the chains or bearing.not having problems with 4wd it is staying in and no noise. have problems finding a used one bc i have the 4 banger.. looking at getting a rebuilt one at Marlin crawler but don't want to jump in to it and it not being the issue. any ideals??:help: thanks

The sound your describing sound like the center support bearing (2 piece drive shaft) i had the same thing happen to me. The sound sounds like a really high pitched TINK when you shift from drive to reverse. Also if i would leave the e-brake off and keep it in first gear and rock the truck back and forth it would make the noise which told me it had to be in the drive line. Mine is a manual so when i would switch from 1st to R and let the clutch out slowly the drive shaft would make a TINK noise that resonated because of the hollow front piece drive shaft. All i did was dropped the rear half of the drive shaft and the nut that holds the companion flange to the second piece was a little loose, so all i did was tighten the companion flange nut down and that solved the noise problem. Check that before condemning the T-case

The drive shaft steady bearing is not gone but it does need to be replace in the future. i have sense tracked down a Transfer case and have replaced it.. the clicking noise is gone. the problem was knowed to be in the TC before i replace.. i just wanted to know if a transfer case from a v6 auto or manual fit a 4 cylinder manual gear box. thanks though.

For future reference, the answer to that is No and No.
