Engine rattle and oil leak

Hi there,

I'm facing two new problems on my 2004 corolla (1.8 1ZZ-FE);

First is oil leak behind the engine / passenger's side.
I've done some research and find out that its common problem of chain tensioner. Can you confirm this in my situation? And how easy is it to fix?

Here is the video for it.

Second is my engine's rattling noise. I'm very confused about that :(

It comes sometimes (mostly I hear it when engine is hot enough).

Here is the vid where you can hear the noise (comes when revs go down).

To me it looks like your timing chain tensioner is what's leaking. It's a fairly easy fix involving a o-ring replacement. I've done this repair before to my 04 corolla, and there are other threads that mention how to fix this problem.

Basic steps:
-Remove the nuts holding the tensioner on (It'll want to pop out)
-Replace o-ring
-Clip the slider down into the locked position
-Replace tensioner & tighten nuts (probably good to clean up some of the oil)
-Turn your alternator until you hear a clicking noise, it's the clip releasing the tensioner arm (I wiggled mine back and fourth because I didn't know which way to turn it)
-Enjoy another beer

That's how it's done

As far as the engine rattle I've only had to replace the tensioner pulley, and your car sounds way different so it's likely not that part :)

I wouldn't bother with RTV. It's just going to make replacing it in the future that much harder if it needs to be done. The rattle doesn't sound normal to me. That could actually be the bearing in the drive belt automatic tensioner doing that. That one's harder to check, but IMO easiest way to isolate the problem is to remove the drive belt and run the engine for a little bit without the drive belt on.

Well that noise does sound terrible. I am not sure how the dealerships or parts stores are in Georgia, but you definitely need a timing chain tensioner o-ring.

Part number for the o-ring is:

90301-22013 - RING, O (FOR CHAIN TENSIONER)

I made a video on resetting the tensioner after replacement here:

As for the noise, like MD1032 mentioned, remove the belt and then start the engine momentarily to see if the noise is gone. If it is, your problem lies with one of the pulleys (likely the tensioner or the water pump). If not I fear you have a problem in the internal engine parts causing the noise (likely the bottom end).

If it is the water pump, the part number is:

WPT106 for Aisin pump (Aisin is OEM pump maker)
16100-09170 for Toyota OEM Pump (Aisin is OEM pump maker)

Drive belt tensioner and drive belt numbers:

Drive Belt Tensioners: All Toyota and aftermarket Tensioners Appear to be identical parts and have identical markings on the body and pulleys (INA) Toyota offered another (OTICS) type which was replaced by the INA type.

Toyota - 16620-0W093 (This is the latest updated tensioner for 2007-2008 models that replaced 16620-22012/22013 OTICS type tensioner)
Dayco - 89356
Goodyear - 49346
Gates/AC Delco - 38286

Drive Belt: It is HIGHLY advisable to NOT go with an OEM Toyota/Bando drive belt. They are known to stretch and squeak in as little as 20K miles.

Gates/Napa Micro-V:

K060739 w/AC
K060605 w/o AC

Goodyear GatorBack:

4060740 w/AC
4060606 w/o AC

hardtopte72 , Thank you for the great post !

I'm going to change chain tensioner, sep. belt , belt tensioner anyway (parts from amazon).

Before parts arrive, I'm going to drive some before the noise come on and then try to remove sep belts to check noise..

I hope I'll manage to solve this ... Good point is that noise comes sometimes not always...

Thanks again and I'll post updates.
