As I was driving home on the 19 October 2017, traveling at approximately 70 mph the posted speed limit, I heard an explosion. After which it started raining glass. I looked up, and there was a hole about the size of a baseball in the sun roof. Looking around the cabin, I couldn’t find a rock or I even thought it could have been a meteorite and lastly a bullet. Nothing, could something have bounced off, I doubt it because of the size of the hole. When I got home, called insurance company and got everything squared away. I told a friend of mine and he said there was just a story on the news about this same subject. So after watching the story, it all came together….Have contacted the NHTSA | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and getting ready to Toyota USA and email asking for my deductible back, apparently this is a known problem in several other makes of cars, but since no one has been killed yet that I could find, nothing has been done yet. The glass isn’t the same design as your wind shield glass, just “safety” glass.

Likely something did hit it and bounce away, even though there was a large hole the blow was probably glancing and the glass still solid at the moment of impact sent the object off to hit someone else. On the replacement glass have it "tinted" with clear film to prevent the glass from coming apart should it happen again.

Throw a rock at ice at a shallow angle, it'll glance off but leave a shattered spot. Same thing with glass. That it shattered from a point away from the edge is proof something hit it, if it was from flexing then it would have shattered from the edge and had a hole at the edge where the shatter started. The more cars that come with sunroofs the more complaints of broken ones there will be. It may not have even hit the glass when the glass broke, if there was a pit or damage to the glass it can shatter later, much like when a pit on a windshield is fine for years then suddenly one day it turns into a crack and spreads. Well on tempered glass it doesn't just crack it shatters and explodes due to internal stresses on the glass due to how tempered glass is made, it's really strong from one direction but weaker from others.
