Does your 2az-fe sound like this? -Sound clip-

Hey
to all gen5 2.4l 4cyl (2az-fe) owners:

Does your engine sound like this while in idle?
My 2005 camry seems to be pretty loud with obvious "clicking" and slighly audible "tapping" noise.

Sound clip- Right click, save-as (698K) <-Rigth click & save-as (Thanks jaguar for the help)

or

Sound Clip on xanga<-clicking takes you to a xanga website. Please wait till the soundclip loads as a background music.

I recorded this clip with the hood open, close to the engine.
Engine was fully warmed up, have 976miles. Outside temperature was 47degrees F.

thanks.

AznVR4, I do notice the clicking sound when i accelerate- but thats when i open the windows. In the cabin with the windows shut, I barely notice the clicking sound- just hear the engine whine. 2.4l camry accelerates smooth, but it seems like the engine does not sound as smooth- rather a little rough.

My engine is more quiet then that, but when i accelerate it feels alittle rough through the gas pedal...I have a 04' 11,000+

yeah i know what you mean, I have a 04 2.4 with 16500 miles and I think im going through the same problem your having, to me when my window is up i do hear it if i really concentrate on it, its comming from the passenger side. when the window is up and if i concentrate on the sound it is in a lot tone of a rattle, with the window down its more noticeable. I am going to have that checked out ASAP when i have the time. Hopfully my Warranty would cover the problem that I am having. Does any one know what Basic Warranty cover?

The warranty of every toyota veihcle is:

Basic: 36months/36,000 miles
Powertrain: 60months/60,000 miles(engine, transmission/transaxle, front-wheel drive, rear wheel drive, seatbelts and airbags).
Rust-Throuhg: 60 months/unlimited miles(corrosion perforation of sheet metal).

Maybe the engine noise is the "character" of camry. In streets i hear rav-4 with 2az-fe making the same sound- and even corolla's 1zz-fe engine(not XRS) have similar sound. Are toyota engines normally like this? Anyone else have this sound?

The ticking is either going to be the lifters being slapped the cams, or the valve's slapping the valve seat. (lift adjustment is too small in either case)

The whirring IDK. If I were guessing it'd be something like a timing belt idler pulley /cam sprocket /one of the accessory belt pulley / alternator / hydrolic pump / water pump whirring around. Not really much to narrow that down, sorry!

my brothers 99 Maxima makes the same noise and his 95 maxima made the same noise as well, i don't know but it seems like its nothing to worry about.

I went to the mechanic today and had that check out, they said it was prob my motor oil that was causing the problem because when the engine is hot the oil tends to get thin and would cause the sound to appear, so i changed my oil today to mobile synthetic 5w-10, but right after i changed it there was no sound at all and i jumped on to the highway to see if that was it, but as soon as i got off the highway, i hear the problem again, so i really dont know wahts going on, I am going to bring it back to another mechanic and have it checked out just to spot out the problem then go straight to Toyota for the warranty coverage

oh... you said you put 5w-10 - isnt that a little too thin? I think Camry needs 5w-30. the thing is I still have factory motor oil in the car with only 1000 miles- and the sound persists regardless of the engine temperature. The cause of the sound i think might be valves tapping or knocking. 1000 miles and im experiencing a very unexpected problem.

Sound Still ticking you off?

Hiya fellas...first post, feeling kinda happy of joining TOYOTANATION...just wondering why I didn't do it sooner.

I have the exact same opinion on my 2AZFE Solara with manual tranny. I know that somebody somewhere is using 10W-40 on his Scion tC and kinda deadened the ticking and tapping sound, but I preffer to stick with the thinner recommended 10W-30 (I live in the caribbean where its plenty hot all year round).

Anyway, I was thinking of taking the car to the dealer (it has 12000 miles on it) due to the ticking noise. I also miss the whirring from the first days using it, but the ticking noise kinda makes me ill...especially with the windows down.

Have any of you fellas kept working at the problem? Any solutions, or is it just typical 2AZFE engine behavior?

^Won't do anything. The sound is from the timing chain slapping around. It gets louder with time, too.

My dad's Gen 5 camry makes a horrible noise at startup, but that's mainly because he never warms up the car for the past three years! Either way, it dies after it warms up.......that reminds me, I need to seafoam his car. It's over 70k miles I believe.

Also, I use 10w-40 oil for my car. So far, it has been doing well for me. :D

Is there a 10W-40 oil (maybe synthetic like Mobil-1 I use on mine) that retains the energy efficiency (ILSAC GF-4 rating)? Toyota doesn't seem to recommend the 10W-40 on my engine...at least the manual doesn't.

I'm open for for all types of inputs
