Hi guys,
When I was in the market for cargo boxes for our highlander pictures were really limited to see how the boxes would look like on the vehicle. So I thought I'd take some pictures to share with you all.

This model is the Yakima Skybox 18 on the factory roof rack.

If you guys have any questions let me know.

That's not fitting in your garage… or mine for that matter.
Haha

Nice! What is the max load on those things?
I don't remember seeing a load limit on the site, but the roof rack's max load is 150lbs. This particular skybox weighs about 50lbs so you have about a 100lbs of stuff you can put into the skybox

Does it interfere with the XM radio at all?
Haven't got around to trying XM out with the skybox on.

I think I'll be getting one of these boxes, not needed yet but I see it in my future. I guess the bigger the better as long as it rides well.
I just got back from a 1400 mile road trip. With the box on, the wind noise wasn't as noticible as I expected it to be. It was still pretty quiet inside the cabin. I averaged about 22mpg driving @70-75mph. So far so good.

Looks great. Yea there wasn't really any pictures when I bought my cargo box during my road trip from the west coast to the east coast ad back. I ended up buying the Thule Sonic large box. Works great and the wind noise isn't that bad at all :) Great way to have extra storage and I put my kids stroller and bags up there when we have the third row seats up

Does it get noisy when backing into the garage?

;->
Lol yes do tell

I currently have an older Yakima RocketBox that I used on my Toyota Sienna. I'll probably get a new box of some sort for the Highlander. Some comments about boxes.

1. Come up with some system when using boxes or bikes on top of the car to keep from driving into the garage. My system is that I have a step ladder in the garage that I set out into my parking place anytime I have bikes or a cargo box on the car to remind me when returning late at night and tired not to drive into the garage.

2. Two main issues with fit are going to be rear hatch clearance and bar spacings. The bar spacing on the Highlander are unfortunately fixed at what....27" or so? This could possibly affect which boxes are usable. Measure your bars from center to center and the boxes to be sure. Also how far the rear of the box extends will affect the ability of the lift gate to open all the way up. On my Sienna the Rocket Box is very long and will prevent the lift gate from opening completely. Not really a problem as it is a manual lift gate but could be more of an issue with the automatic lift gates on the new Highlanders. I'm not sure what happens to the power lift gate if it can't open all the way.

3. Weight capacity will be determined by the crossbars and crossbar attachment points. These boxes will hold enormous amounts of weight, it is the crossbar you need to worry about. I suspect it is actually the crossbar attachment point that actually determines capacity as that seems to be the weak link in the system.

4. If you park on the street, pay attention to which side the box opens. You definitely want a box that opens on the passenger side if you normally park on city streets because you live in an apartment.

5. Buy a small folding step stool and stash it in your car. These beasts are too high to deal with unless you are in the NBA.

I originally wanted to get one of these also for our road trip to Florida, but there seems to be a major issue with clearance going into parking garages in Florida! Most attraction places have super low clearance (universal studio) for 1 has a low clearance garage. It's not like we can take it off and unpack into the hotel room either! I'm leaning towards a cargo bag now because of this issue.

Take a look at the Thule Transporter http://www.thule.com/en-us/us/produ...s-and-racks/boxes-and-baskets/rear-mounted-cargo/thule-transporter-665c-_-31144 if you have a trailer hitch installed. I have one and love it, and I can open the rear hatch without tilting the transporter. I used it on my 2009 Highlander as well. No effect on gas mileage (maybe a little plus!) and while not as big as some of the roof top carriers it carries a lot. And can get into low parking garages. Not any longer than a crew cab with standard bed, either.
