For those of you that are more mechanicly inclinded than me, what would be involved with getting rid of my lsd? I hate it so much! I never had a vehicle with it and i should have done more research but everytime i get on my truck a little from 1st to 2nd it kicks in and almost sends me through the window. Is this even a realistic thing to do or am i just getting into something thats not worth the money/hassle? thanks in advance!

What exactly do you mean it kicks in and sends you through the window? If it "kicks in" you would experience a "power slide".

It's actually a really cheap fix....but will require some skill.
The third member, or carrier needs to be removed from the rear axle. That's where the easy part stops.
You then have to disable the 3rd member, remove the LSD and replace with an open carrier. You can probably pick one up dirt cheap on craigslist, through this forum or a junkyard. You then have to rebuild the 3rd with the new open carrier. Rebuild kits run about $100.

Another option, see if there is someone on here that would be willing to trade their open diff for your LSD diff. No need to rebuild and you could probably make a few dollars in the deal, since the LSD diff would be more sought out than an open diff.

Good luck.

You can find a full write up on rebuilding a Toyota 3rd here:

Hmm.

It may be even cheaper, though not easier. If you completely take apart the third member, you'll be holding the clutch pack in your hands. Just put it back together without the clutch pack, or maybe without a spacer so they don't contact firmly. Ta-da, open diff.

But seriously, the lsd shouldn't affect shifting. Are you sure that's what you want to do?

I have a LSD on my truck and I have never experienced what you are talking about, and I've smashed on the gas pretty good from time to time. The LSD doesn't just "kick in" it's always there.

LSD's in our trucks don't engage...they are mechanical and are ALWAYS on. Your "kick" must be from something else like the transmission or something. Could you describe it better?

It won't really do much for you up front, and I think the front's may lock in 4wd, i know I have a hell of a time turning on trails in 4x4 (which is why it doesn't get used much)

And the transfer case will lock the two together (front and rear) it is not like an AWD car w/ the center diff. If that is what you are asking

The hard time turning is from the lack of a center diff...all 4x4 Tacoma's come with an open front diff from the factory.

Damn thats right, sorry i didn't even think of that, an thats my bad.

I wasn't thinkin when i made that post, thing is i knew that too

There is a much easier and way more fun fix to your problem. Just drain your rear diff oil and replace it with "normal" 90 weight. Then go to walmart at about 3 in the morning and do about twenty donuts clockwise in second gear at 5000rpms, and then twenty counterclockwise. It will eat all of the fiber off the disks. You'll know it's toast when you get a one tire fire when powerbraking it. Go home and change the oil again, good to go. If it grenades, take it to the dealer and get a new one. Oh and watch out for light poles.

newtaco, are you really refering to the VSC and not the LSD. The LSD is a Limited Slip Differential and VSC is the Vehicle Stability Control.

Not all Tacomas have VSC but it is an option that kills power to the engine when wheel spin is detected.

I have it on my Infiniti and I despise it! When it activates, the vehicle stops and you keep traveling as an object in motion remaining in motion until you are restrained by your seatbelt or the windshield.

In my Infiniti, there is a switch that allows you to turn off the VSC....I don't know about the Tacoma.

Thanks guys i know it sounds weird but maybe it is the vsc! I didn't think i had that option but im going to double check. And i guess i explained it wrong, it's more like a sudden loss of power but my vw had it and it wasn't so drastic but maybe thats just how it is. thanks again.

Auto-LSD is part of the VSC/TRAC package, so if he has the Auto-LSD it could still be VSC/TRAC. Sounds like Traction Control to me.
