Hello everyone ToyotaNation.com, my name is Joshua Ellis and I'm new to the forum,

I am the owner of a 1991 Toyota Corolla DX sedan that has a 3 speed automatic transmission that broke down a month ago, and have been having thoughts on switching to a 4 speed, will there be any difference in gas mileage, performance, and would I have to do anything in particular like reprogram the computer?

Any info would be great, thanks. 👍

You should get better gas mileage on the highway with the 4-speed because of the extra higher gear. Your cruising speed will have a lower engine RPM.

If the transmission ends in L it is mechanic rather than transmissions that end in E which are electronically controlled, so it may not need a different computer. The neutral start switch mounted on the outside of the transmission might have a different wire connector or it might be the same.

You might want to look on ebay for a factory repair manual and wiring diagram. You can find the repair manual for $40-50 usually. This will save you time in the long run if you are doing the swap yourself.

I think LEs and SR5s are more likely to have four speeds. Yeah just search my threads, PO put in an A240L but didn't bolt it together very well, so it began to separate & cracked the flexplate. That was the loud thunk on startup when I bought it. XD

I bugged DrZ, Clone and others on here quite a bit and owe them a lot.
