Hoping somebody here has experience with timing chain or head gasket replacement on this car.
I have an 09 Matrix 1.8L with 2ZR-FE engine, Recently replaced head gasket. Following Chilton's manual to do head gasket and timing chain.
Problem:After installing the timing chain/tensioner, and hand cranking the engine, the chain is consistently skipping teeth.
I am ensuring that my Cams/crank are at TDC and the chain marks are always properly aligned when i installed the timing chain cover. Initially i thought i had a worn chain/rails (even though the chain is in spec) so i replaced with a new timing kit (new tensioner, new chain, new rails, new crank sprocket) and have the same issue. It apprears that the tensioner is not extending far enough to the slack side of the chain and i'm losing tension at the crank causing skipping teeth.
i have wire tied the chain upwards to ensure it is tight until i release the tensioner. It seens the tensioner is extending about 3 clicks when i release it, but it needs to extend further when i crank it but it is not. i am putting the oil filter housing on also to ensure the tensioner is getting oil pressure.
ive had a friend who is a certified Honda Tech look over my work and walk me through it, and he is also confused why its not timing properly. Hes not an expert at this engine however.
