1. Question. If the car battery goes dead, how do you open the trunk? I know there must be a place to insert the manual key, but I can't find where. (There is a keyhole in the door but not the trunk?)

2. Reason I ask is that yesterday morning, went to start the car and the battery was dead, all I heard was a few clicks. Put battery on a charger for a ten minutes, then went to start. Engine cranked and just before the battery died again, it started. Check engine light came on. (Tech said it was because of all the cranking...... He then cleared the code). Drove to dealer who cleared the code, put load tester on battery and saw that the battery was good. Tested for battery drain. Could not find anything wrong. Returned home, parked car. Went out this morning and car started right up. No problem.

Tech thought I may have left something on in the car, but whenever something is left on, it goes off by itself. I.E., door left open, interior lights go off after 10-20 minutes. Ignition left on, (engine not running) ignition goes off after one hour. No idea what could have caused it. I'm going to check the battery connections, just in case there is a loose connection.

Ok, back to question 1. How do you open the trunk with a dead battery?

The trunk release if I'm not mistaken is behind the rear seat armrest. If a door is left open, or trunk lid, the battery will drain. Happens all the time on the lot.
Nope! Don't think it happens to many cars today. On my Highlander and this one, if you leave door open, interior lights will turn off after a few minutes just like the OP mentioned.

In my Avalon V6, if you open the pass-through door behind the rear seat armrest, there is a small loop of cable just inside, at the top. If you reach in and pull on the loop the trunk opens. I understand there's something similar inside the small door behind the rear seat armrest in the Avalon Hybrid.

I FOUND It. In the owners manual, page 114. Found it at the same time above msg was posted. Went out to the car and sure enough, it was there, and it was there, and it works.

Still have not figured out why the battery went dead a few days ago. Last three mornings, battery was good and car started as it should. Yesterday, even double checked that the battery connections were tight. They were. Can't figure it out.

Reason I asked is that I will be leaving for my Roswell address in a few days and will carry both a set of jumper cables plus a battery charger in the trunk, at least until I can trust it again.

They get left open all the time at the dealership, thats how we end up jumping/replacing lots of batteries.
Whao! how many is a lot? How many sold and how many with dead batteries? Don't you think it's defective instead of dead battery due to door opened?

Well, keep what you believe. I don't think there is a need to discuss further since leaving doors open on this vehicle does nothing to battery.

Ok, we'll just discredit all of the master techs that tell us not to leave doors open. Must be a battery fairy out there draining batteries

Seriously though, various computer systems will not go into "sleep mode" if a door is left open.

How bad is this flaw? You have to be a contortionist to get through to the backseat to make the release. Why is there not a trunk release except that one, when the battery is dead? I have a 2015 Avalon hybrid. It is such a disappointment in quality compared to my old 2000. Would not do Toyota again. It is so user unfriendly.

Its under the trunk ledge, opposite side of the liftgate button, the key will be pointed up into it, instead of horizontal! check to out and see if you can find yours, it's on my 2020 Avalon! Good Luck! KC

[/QUOTE]

My battery died last week, and did not have enough juice to crank the engine. However, there was enough juice to pop the trunk lid using the push button.

There is also a key hole as mentioned in post #11.

There is no key hole for the trunk on either our 2013 or the 2014 Gen 4 Avalons. You open the pass thru door behind the rear seat arrn rest ( lockable with key) glove box also can be locked with key) look at the top of the pass thru just slightly inside the trunk and you will see a black color wire that looks more like a electrical wire with a loop pull the loop to the left it will pop the trunk. The other pull way back near the tail lights is no concern unless you lock yourself in the trunk.

2019 and later have a keyhole hidden on the exterior left side under the top lip of the trunk lid opposite the pushbutton release.
