Mine also runs at halfway on the temperature guage. Have not measured actual temp with a thermometer. Doesn't sound like there is a problem. I even used to have an old Geo Prizm (same engine as Corolla) and it would run at slightly above halfway up the temperature guage.

If you think your thermostat isn't opening up take it out and put it in a pot where you can boil water with a thermometer. Check the following as you heat the water (from the service manual):
- The thermostat should open at 176-183 degrees fahrenheit.
- The valve should open (lift) 10mm or more at 203 degrees.

If the thermostat fails either test, it should be replaced.

 

My XRS when thoroughly warmed sits right in the middle and so did my previous 04 Corolla S.

 

Halfway (laying horizontal from your point of view) should be normal. We've driven 2 "modern" Corollas before and they were both reading normal at halfway on the temp gauge.

yup my 97 corolla was always at the dead middle on the temp guage. The car is fine, however you can probably get a low temp thermostat and throw some redline water wetter in the rad if you're concerned about temps.

I've found that in most Toyotas, it's running about half-way. In most of my friend's Hondas, they run about half a marker notch down from halfway.

 

mine is 89 rolla and the temp gauge is also halfway. That the normal.

Hey everyone! My girlfriend has a 2003 Corolla LE automatic with 55k on it. Recently it has been running very hot. I flushed the radiator and put new fluid in and it is still running hot (about half way on the gauge). I think the thermostat might be getting stuck and not opening all the way? That is my guess? What temp should it be running at normal operation? I am guessing no more than 145 degrees? Right now it is running at half way on the gauge which is too hot for this little car. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

Normal hot temp is what your thermostat (car specs) is set for opening 180-195F is the range of most cars..My Rolla stays at half when hot...Make sure when you change your fluid that you "burp" get rid of any air pockets, they can block your circulation just as bad as a solid block...It just happened to my buddies grand prix because he didn't get all the air out and it overheated and blew a HG--$1000...Most cars will have a little screw/valve(check an auto repair book) near your gooseneck to do this...Good Luck...Radd Guy

Yeah, both my Corollas go about the halfway mark. I'd not overrate slight differences in the gauge reading, as they are not THAT accurate.

It is, of course, possible to meter it with a good thermometer, but it needs care
when opening the lid, as otherwise you may get sprayed all over with boiling hot water.

Around 85-90 degrees Celsius is normal (and by the way, there may be different thermostats available depending on which area of the world you are, Canada may have a 'hotter' thermostat than, say Arizona).

85 degrees Celsius = 185 degrees Fahrenheit
90 degrees Celsius = 195 degrees Fahrenheit.

With some manufacturers deciding to run a certain model 5 dC/9dF hotter or cooler, you can safely estimate that anything between approx. 80 C /175 F
and 95 C/200 F is totally normal. In some extreme cases, like driving up
a mountain pass fully loaded on a hot summer day, your temp. may rise to over 100 degrees C/ 212 F. No problems, unless always like that.

To check what temperature is normal, check your thermostat. It opens at the "normal" operating temperature. You can estimate your temperature if the gauge needle changes reading.
