How to Protect Carpet of Vehicle? Replace Carpet with Rubber? Protective Cover

Ideally I would prefer it if my vehicle's carpet was made of rubber instead of carpet (easier to maintain and clean).

Since both my vehicles come with carpeting on the floor I am thinking I will just cover them with a protective film instead :( (an undesirable work around since I don't know of another option). I know the Honda Insight comes with rubber floors on the car but I am unsure how that can translate to a Toyota with rubber floor (without paying an arm and a leg for something custom). My budget is no more than $50 (maybe $100 max).

I am thinking of using a protective film on top of the carpet instead like this one :

I can make my own protector but I don't know what sort of an adhesive to use. I can get plastic sheeting from the stores but I am unsure what strength of an adhesive will work on protecting the carpet? There are so many spray on adhesives and I am unsure which one would be ideal. I don't want to the protective layer to be on the carpet permanently (just to stick to the carpet and to provide it with protection). If something goes wrong with the protecting layer like too many scratches or tearing for some reason I would like to be able to remove the cover and replace it with another without hurting the carpet.

Any suggestions ?

Buy weather tech floor liners (not mats)....they're essentially plastic "trays" that sit on the carpet. Make sure you take the carpeted floor mats out first. I have the plastic liners in my car and have very little dirt that needs to be vacuumed out once every 4-6 months.

^You can buy the front pair of liners only for under $100. I have seen a bunch on places like craigslist for as low as $40 for the front pair. They are expensive but if you're that careful about your carpet nothing else compares, IMO.

Nice find!!! I hope you like them, I know I sure do when it comes to rain/snow/other junk that accumulates on the floor. And the best part is, to clean it you just pop them out, throw it on the driveway, and spray away. Super convenient!

I know dealers use the adhesive plastic wrap on most vehicles nowadays and take it out when the vehicle is sold, that stuff works pretty well also, just be careful if you use any floor mats on top of it.

Well I have you to thank for providing this potentially awesome solution. I have yet to install it. The fedex driver just delivered it.

You have no idea how many months I was thinking constantly about a solution to this. I looked at tarps and plastics and clear canvases and adhesive tapes and velcro and pins to hold down the plastics and staples and staple guns to staple the canvas to the carpet and even called people to ask if they will remove the entire carpeting and just place a rubber floor on it (too prohibitively expensive).

One thing is for sure manufacturing of cars can be vastly improved. It is most frustrating to see all these antiquated mechanisms in a transportation that is over a 100 years old.

Now the only problem is that despite the deep clean I have like major stains on the carpet. I think someone must have spilled coffee on the floor because the deep cleaner keeps picking up this really black and brown liquid. The seats are a mess too because they have these hideous brown stains which I cannot understand but ... if all else fails I will just unload a few more bottles of carpet cleaner on it and then take it to a professional :(

I agree, it can be extremely difficult to get stains out. I have red carpet in my Mustang from the factory and gave up trying to clean it....I just disassembled the entire interior in my garage and replaced the carpet. It was fairly simple though, as it's a 95 and there's not much for electronics/air bags to worry about.

I would try to clean it a couple more times and see what happens.
