Hey guys,

Just went to try and change the cabin air filter on my recently acquired 5th gen. I've performed this procedure numerous times on the 4th gen. The 5th gen seems to be more difficult as i for the love of me cant seem to figure out how to remove the 2nd cover that houses the actual filter.

I looked at the manual and it tells you with an illustration how to remove if but I cant figure out how to get the tab undone. Of course I don't want to hamfist it and break the damned thing.

Anyone who has performed this service on the 5th gen and can offer some real world advice it would be most appreciated!

I wish they kept the 4th gen setup though. So easy it is!

Thanks!

The first cover and second cover operate the same way for removal.
The first cover(inside glove box) releases by the tab on the right side(that's the one w\ center tab on the right side).
The second cover releases also on the right side(in the center). Get a finger exactly in the middle(on the right side inside cover)behind the lip and flick it towards you. The left side of the inside cover acts like a hinge also and the clips on the left should let go and drop out or just gently wrestle it out. Use A Flashlight! for those areas!

I fully understand your problem. I broke the tabs on 2 covers. My suggestion is this. Spray some silicone spray on a Q Tip and rub it over the tabs on the right side of the cover. Then take your fingers and squeeze the tabs together and pull the right side of the cover out then the left side of the cover should come out. When you replace the cover put the left side in first. It’s a pain in the rear. You may break the tabs a couple of times like I did before you get the hang of it. The covers are cheap. You can buy them from a Toyota dealer online if you need to.

After you have taken the QTip with the silicone spray on it and rubbed it on the tabs on the right side of the cover and you can‘t squeeze the tabs together with your fingers then take a small needle nose pliers and very gently squeeze the tabs together and then pull straight out. It’s a Mickey mouse arrangement. Good luck.

Glad you found the answer. In general, if you search on YouTube for general questions like this for the 2018- Camry, usually the answers are the same for the 2019- Avalon.

PS - the cabin filter OEM part number for the Avalon is 87139-YZZ37, and the cheapest online place to order them that I could find is toyota.oempartsonline.com . Hope that helps.

Yup 8th gen camry equals 5th gen avalon and 7th gen es. 7th gen camry equals 4th gen avalon and 6th gen es.

Thanks for that link. I'll save it to favorites!

I actually got the filter off rockauto as I got a bunch of things for the car: leds for the door panels and trunk, dash cover, brake pads etc...
