I Need some Camry CV axle length knowledge

I am attempting to install the CV axles on my 90’ Camry. Built in 07/90 in Japan.

The shop manual (Haynes) shows half axles that bolt into mid shafts, mine do not.

The passenger side is a two piece axle with a carrier bearing; the driver’s side axle has a snap ring. Mine were shot and in pieces, I was not able to match them for exact length.

The parts house needed to look at the listings all the way to 92’ before finding a Camry with this axle setup. And this is what they sold me. The splines match up, however the axle seems to be approximately an inch to long.

Does this seem possible? How many different length axles are there ?

which engine?

Fine another parts supplier, there is no mystery to getting the correct part for these cars, so many on the road.

It's pretty hard to measure an axle, but here are the specs from the FSM.

I put an EMPI branded axle in my 1993 and was happy with it. But whatever you do, don't compress the inboard joint too much or the balls could fall out!

What year are these axles for? I am hoping to find the length for 1990 4cly, auto, front wheel, are mfg in Japan.

The ones I purchased (L & R) are for a 92’ to install on my 90’. And the ball joints are a good inch from aligning with the LCR.

These axles came with ABS rings, mine didn’t have them, the parts guy told to remove them and try it again. I gained a ½”, but I’m still 1” from making up.

I have checked to be sure the axles are seating in the differential, and they are.

Thanks for your help

Thanks for all your help 71’Corolla. I once owned a 71’, it was Butterscotch, it was 1 ½ yr old when I picked it up. Was the first Car I owned; Damm I forgot all about that one!
It left with my EX…..

You are right this is the wrong axle, the (new) left side axle measures 37.43” compressed. I dumped my old axles at the store and I did not have anything to compare length too.

It did not make any since that given the changes that took place in 92’ the axles would be interchangeable. I guess Old dogs can still learn a lesson or two.

I guess I’ll be talking with Parts Store Monday

I finally had time to get back to this project. It is amazing what a difference the right parts can make.

I was able to get my axles from a parts source I had dealt with years ago for VW, Volvo & some Datson/ Nissan parts. I had forgotten they dealt Toyota parts as well. It was nice to be asked the right questions about my car instead of me having to do all the questioning about the parts.

Thanks “71Corolla” for setting me straight :chug:
