"Inherent" problem caused by moon roof

Shortly after purchasing our 2008 HL Sport (Sandy Beach) back in November the weather finally cooperated to allow a road trip to try out the moon roof. Approaching 40mph, with moon roof wide open, there was a very noticeable and annoying vibration in the roof just above the driver's window. Understandably there will be some "wind" noise with an opened moon roof but the vibration is so loud and annoying I have to keep it closed or deflect it upward when traveling 38-50 mph. Now, by taking your hand and applying pressure on the area of the roof the vibration stops or is at least not as noticeable.

I would never consider having it open while cruizing the interstates but certainly had every intention of enjoying it at other times.

We finally got around to getting the toyo to the dealership today and they knew right off the bat about this "inherent" problem. Uh-oh, the "I" word.

The service manager acknowleged there have been reports, including one customer with a 2007. Others with the 2008s have NOT been resolved. The manager's initial thought as way to correct would be try installing a wind shield; he stated they probably would be willing to work out a "cost-share" arrangement with us. In the meantime, he has asked that we bring the toyo back in the near future for the regional Toyota rep to inspect. The dealership's service manager stated he wanted to be sure Toyota was fully aware of this "inherent" problem.

Unfortunately, dealership was unable to locate a shield for the 2008 HL. TOYO is obviously lacking in available accessories for the 2008. A friend of a co-worker with a 2008 HL experienced the same problem that took approximately 6 months to resolve. We're in process of trying to contact these individuals for details.

We also discovered an incredible "wind tunnel" noise with windows rolled down. I can't recall the sequence and if all windows and/or moon roof was open. But it was something I've never experienced in a vehicle. Some of you may recall as children having to ride in the back seat on those long family trips during the hottest part of the year in vehicles NOT equipped with a/c, windows rolled down, hair flying unless you wore a scarf, etc. That level of wind noise paled in comparison to what we experienced in the 2008 HL.

We will post updates as they come in.

This has been discussed before, and it is covered in the HL manual. The sunroof has a stop point a few inched before it is fully open which prevents the loud vibrating (helicopter) sound. You are not supposed to have it wide open when you are driving. I'm not sure this is really a problem, it's just the way things are.

The "helicopter" sound you describe is the "wind tunnel" noise I believe I was referring to. This is caused by some, if not all, windows opened and possibly the moon roof. at the same time. Again, I can't recall the sequence but more than two windows were opened. However, this does not explain the original problem with the physical vibration of the interiar ceiling above driver's head just above the window. The vibrating material also creates the annoying sound that's something like "whomp, whomp..". Vibration starts when acceleratoin reaches approximately 38mph. What's interesting is it does not happen on the front passenger side! Dealership acknowledged we should be able to drive at lower speeds with moon roof open WITHOUT vibration. However, we would experience wind noise, something I would expect.

If weather permits, we plan to take a back road trip this weekend and we will attempt to recreate the "helicopter" sound and will report back.

If I'm not mistaken, a wind deflector pops up when moon roof is opened. If this is the case, then quite possibly the overall design is not adequately deflecting the wind up and away to prevent excess wind entering through the opened chanels between roof and fabric ceiling. My understanding from dealership is 2007 models had same problem. Our service manager reported one customer was able to install a deflector over the existing moon roof that solved the "vibration" problem.

This problem is not specific to the Highlander. Others have it too. My 2000 RX300, with the windows down produced a deafening thumping sound that wwould make you sick if you had to listen to it more that 15 seconds.

You'll probably need to close the window to a certain degree to rid the sound.

If any of the rear windows are open then we get that super loud thumping sound so bad it's a form of torture. Not sure what to do if the kids want their back windows open and I want my front window closed.

My Toyota Highlander 2008 Sport with it's moonroof full open and travelling at intestate speeds is the quietest car I have ever owned so I am very happy with the level of wind noise. Maybe I just got lucky and got a quiet car or maybe I am just not so sensitive to a little bit of wind noise.....

Power Moon Roof Update

It's now January 2009, one year after our original post about the wind noise/vibration when Moon roof is opened on our 2008 Highlander.

The vehicle was inspected by the TOYO regional rep at which time he acknowledged there is a design flaw with the power Moon roof on the 2008 Highlander. During test drive, the TOYO rep not only acknowledged the vibration we had noted but he also located another section on driver's side close to center panel separating front and rear doors. He agreed the vibration level is unacceptable and that TOYO would install a wind deflector once a suitable one was made available at no cost to us. However, to date, no wind shield has become available that meets TOYO's seal of approval, or so we've been informed.

If there is a design flaw in the power moon roof, I would expect Toyota to issue a general recall and not just install a deflector for a single customer. As no one else on this board seems to have this problem, I wonder if it's just a defect in the manufacturing of YOUR Highlander......

My '05 Odyssey and my previous Infiniti i30 and Pathfinder makes a nasty wind thumping noise on the highway as well with the widows and moonroof opened. That is why I opted to locate an HL without a moonroof since I've almost never used it on my other cars unless when i'm sitting in traffic.

I got a deflector on my Highlander and it looked really dumb (no offence), it didn't help much and it ended up getting ripped off by the snow and I never replaced it. I usually tilt the sunroof, and if I do open it up I leave the rear passenger window down a crack and it works fine! The 745 does the same too and that’s a 100k (new) luxury car so it's not just a Toyota problem.

I agree. I've had a moon roof in other cars I owned and had the same problem in most. In fact, I had an Acura Legend that had the reverse problem/solution that everyone has described. With the moon roof open and the built-in deflector deployed the car was incredibly whisper quiet, but if any window was opened even a crack then the fluttering and booming started. It's just a natural occurrence when opening up a big hole in an aerodynamic flow.
