Just had Bilsteins Installed

I don't have any side-by-side comparisons yet but I pulled up next to my father's FJ for comparison. iPhone picture quality.

The mechanic said he did one shock at a time and during the install it was clear to see that the bilsteins made the rear sit higher. He said that gave about an extra 1" of height in the rear. The fronts were set to 1.75".

I took measurements all around prior to the install but it is raining here now, so i will do measurements all around again later to see what difference in height I really got front and back.

All in all, rides really smooth and bump steer is significantly less noticeable. So far, seems great. Just need to get a wheel alignment tomorrow and get my KMC revolvers installed. Will post pics in the next day or two.

Truck looks great. I am doubtful that the shocks will always provide 1" of lift in the rear, as it's more the job of the leafs to provide for ride height. However, who am I to doubt the mechanic, it's hard to beat real empirical experience.

What size rim/tire combo are you gonna run now that you are 1.75" higher. Any plans for an AAL or aftermarket leaf pack?

Tires are Kumho KL-71 MTs 265/70/17.

No, my truck came with the 4 leaf pack and the only reason i got the Billies was to level the truck out.

I only went 1.75" because many complain of a stiff ride when set at 2.5". If I did an AAL it would just bring back the rake into the truck and defeat the whole purpose of my getting the 5100's. My second reason for getting them was the improvement on bump steer over the stock billies, much better.

There is no way that putting on just shocks in the rear can it raise your truck. It prolly just lloks that way. They dont push up your truck they simply slow down the motion up and down. I cant believe a mechanic actually said this.
Your truck looks great by the way.

Basically what happened was he did one rear shock, then lowered the truck and went to do the other one. But with on stock rear and one 5100 rear he said the truck was tilted up on the side with the 5100. Perhaps it just needs to settle. The stock billies only had 4,000kms on them during 2.5 months I've had the truck, so I don't know how long they take to settle. Perhaps the 5100's are stiffer than the stock ones so they don't compress as much under the stock truck weight.

I don't think he would just say it for no reason.

I will find out for sure when I measure but the mechanic is a great guy and has one all my work for many years. He installed the 4 x 5100's for $100 CAD total. Seemed like a great price from what I've read from other users on here.

Thanks, I can't wait to get the rims on it. I think the black rims would look awesome with blacked our badges, I just need to get up the guts to take them off......

Stopped by Toyota on my way home and snapped some pics next to a brand new 09 Tacoma so the suspension is still perky (or unsettled if it will settle).

Anyways, gives a good idea of what the Bilsteins at 1.75" gave me. I love it, Truck looks completely level but only measurements will tell the truth.

The back looks on par, so perhaps my factory shocks had settled making the bilsteins give it a temporary lift in the rear.

I think the tire size suits it well, no desire to go any bigger on my part.

On a side note, they had a brand new DBL Cab, TRD Sport, Alpine White there and man it looked good, kinda made me question my choice. I like everything white / black.

Sorry, but I'm not. New shocks will usually try to expand with some force. Not a lot, but they can take some of the pressure off of the springs, allowing the springs to lift the vehicle by a little. Not by much, but it does happen.

I don't want to keep hijacking the thread, so I think we're gonna have to agree to disagree. ;)

Ill agree with that
