Lane Change Blink Count

Hi Everyone,

I've seen some owners posting about making the dealer changes to their Camry with regard to windows rolling down, sunroof opening, etc.

I haven't seen anyone post about the lane change signal feature. Apparently the dealer is supposed to be able to modify the # of times the signal activates (from 3 to 5, 7, or 9 times) according to the owner's manual.

Well, I've had my 2013 XLE Camry in twice now to the dealer where I leased it from and both times they were unable to find the spot in the software where it can be changed. The most recent visit this week they called Toyota Canada and were told by the engineers that it was "a mistake in the owner's manual and that value can't be changed."

So my question to all you Techstream experts is: were they just telling me a tale to get rid of me or is that true? Thanks for your help!

When you briefly depress and then release the turn signal arm it will automatically flash the turn signal in the direction you pressed a set number of times. The default is three. I'm looking to have it changed to five, as indicated in the manual. The dealership is saying they can't find the setting and claims Toyota Canada told them it can't be done--it's a mistake in the manual.

^ thanks for the explanation.

my car is too old for that. Amazes me how many ppl don't know how to use the regular blinker. They just slow down and sits there till they can turn. ppl get stuck behind them and don't know what's going on. They even turn right in front of the NO TURN sign.

Really? It's just a quick lane change, that's what it's for. AFAIK, most new American cars have the 3 blink. My Tahoe does, and so does a relatives F250. Never heard of a car with a 5 blink.

Yup three blinks is a joke. The hole point of turn signals is to let people know before hand you are going to make a turn or lane change. I would guess 20% of the people never signal at all. 50-60% of the people signal most of the time but usually start to signal during the lane change or turn. So this leaves 20-30% of the people on the road that might get it close to correct. One of my biggest pet pevs are people that brake for a turn then signal the turn as they turn. This is just wrong! You should signal before you start to brake. Brake lights and turn signals were invented for a purpose, to let other motorists know beforehand a vehicle is going to make some type of attitude change.

Every year more and more people forget how to drive. Then give licenses to new drivers that are no longer required to really know the laws or even how to drive, in Minnesota anyway. Emigrants are allowed to use an interpreter here in Minnesota. I have heard that its not uncommon for the interpreter to coach the people taking the written test. A few years ago I was talking to a customer of mine about this very subject. He was a legal emigrant and was taking the Minnesota written test. While doing so he overheard an interpreter giving the answers to another emigrant in his native language. My customer went and told the people in charge and he was told not to worry about it. We need to make English the official language. If you can't speak, read and write in English too f'ing bad go back where you came from.

Other thoughts: Most states have laws stating that slower traffic must keep right when the road design does not prohibit doing so. Many states have signs stating so. Here in Minnesota these signs were removed years ago even though its still the law. BTW there is no mention of speed limits anywhere in these laws as far as I know, Minnesota for sure. Years ago most people, 90+% I would guess understood this and besides its just common courtesy. Today its less than 10%. Every day I see people get on the highway and go straight for the left lane for no reason. Usually causing several or many cars to slow down. This causes huge trains of cars and traffic jams. Logic dictates if no one is directly in front of you and there are one or more cars behind you get the F out of the left lane. It has gotten so bad in Minnesota that I have had several people tailgate me, flash lights or honk while I'm driving in the right most lane. Makes me think people now think the right lane is the fast lane?

Makes me shake my head several times each day. No wonder this country in in trouble. 90% of the people in the US are idiots!

The routine should be:
1. 2 blinks
2. lane change
3. 1-2 blinks

Absolutely necessary for 5-7 blinks. 3 blink lane changes would be too sudden and cause chaos. (not that many people don't use signals already)

You make a lane change in between two blinks?! For me its about:

1. 2-3 Blinks In Lane
2. 3 Blinks Lane Change
3. 2 Blinks One In Lane
----------------------
Total: 7-8 Blinks

Which is why I was going to go with 9 and just let it blink once or so more after Ive completed the lane change.

Hi Everybody,

Just thought I would follow-up on this since I was the one who started the whole thread! LOL

So, I'm confirming that for a 2013 Camry the process that was posted re: the Lexus does NOT work, although I appreciate the detective work! It is in fact done through the Techstream software and a cable connection to the car.

Brought my vehicle in to a different dealership, their service manager actually worked on a 2013 Camry until he found the spot the option was located. He also confirmed with Toyota Canada that it WAS a changeable option and the owner's manual is, in fact, correct.

He did it right in front of me...took all of five minutes. It's under the "Main Body" ECU, then the "Warnings" section. NOT in lighting. The options are: "Off, then 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 blinks".

I chose five and that seems to be the right number for me. I was always trained "mirror, signal, blind spot then start the lane change." Doing that requires more than 3 blinks of a signal or rushing the whole blind spot check. Which is still kind of important, even WITH a blind spot monitor. ;) LOL

Any chance that you can maybe post a DIY? It would be great! :D

No, they were great about it. Took them a couple of days to track down exactly where in the software this option was but at least they cared enough to actually look. When he called me back he told me up front I could drop in without an appointment anytime and he (service manager) would personally help me out, free of charge.

When I told their service manager what the other dealership had said to me about a "mistake in the manual" his exact words were, "Yeah, someone was lying." LOL
