I'd like to see some results from a random sampling of 2014 Highlander owners if you'd like to participate:

  • On your next 60+ mile highway trip, could you please set your cruise to 70 mph and do both a hand calculation (would have to fill up first of course) and also note the computer mpg's?
  • Please note your current odometer readings as well - this will help factor in new vs broken-in vehicles.
  • Please note which engine and drivetrain you have (4 cyl or 6 cyl - FWD or AWD)
  • Please denote whether you encountered flat or hilly terrain, headwinds, and any pertinent geographical or weather considerations.
  • Please include whether you use standard or synthetic oil. (I may be way off here, but I swear my vehicles get better mpg with synthetic - less friction?? Maybe I'm wrong here)

Please post your findings here.

I am curious because Consumer Reports testing shows they attained 17 mpg City and 27 mpg highway - and want to know if this is a fluke, or if those mpg's are actually attainable.

I realize that many people drive faster than that, but I would like a fairly controlled test if we can get one.... this would be valuable info for prospective and current owners.

The MPG thread seems to be all over the board with postings of various guesstimates of city/hwy percentages, varying speeds, etc.

Thanks for participating!

Since my trip starts out in the Boston area....I'll have to pass. Cruise at 70 in the Boston will get you killed or run off the road.

But I did do a trip this past weekend. I was averaging about 75+ and I got 23 on the way down...and 24 on the way back. My 4runner would only have gotten about 19. So I'm very pleased for a 25% increase over my 4runner.

I can't participate. I rarely if ever go above 70 mph. Most highway speeds near me are around 55 mph, the occasional 60 or 65 but mostly 55.... I try to keep it within 7 mph of posted speed limit on most highways.

But I can say I am initially impressed with Gen 3 since I have had it. Gen 2 avg 16/17 mpg in the early miles....my gorgeous new HL has avg 21/22 in all of its newness.

All 2014 Highlanders are equipped with synthetic oil from the factory.:D

Anyone know if you can have the dealer do the oil earlier and have it marked off as done? That way they don't have you double dipping, yet you can be flexible of when you use the service vs paying for it, or doing yourself.

My dealer adamantly refused to change the oil on my wife's Camry Hybrid for free at 5,000 miles/6 months. They did change the oil at 6,000 miles/12 months. My wife does not drive that much. All they would do is the tire rotation and multi-point inspection. They did offer the change the oil, but I would be charged. They said 10,000 miles/12 months is the recommendation from Toyota.
