Hi,
My car seems loud lately especially when I first start it. There seems to be a leak in the exhaust where the "weaved section" of exhaust pipe is located next to the oil pan. Would somebody tell me what the name of that is and how common a problem it is? It's a 92 2.2 liter.

Thanks
Tony

It's called a "flex pipe" because it actually does flex. If you ever looked at your engine while the car was idling and had someone give it a bit of gas, you will see the engine rock forward. This woven "flex pipe" actually allows the exhaust system to flex with the engine. Without it, the exhaust system would be rigid and break almost immediately as the engine flexes (rotates forward and back). This is a fairly expensive part of the exhaust system, so I would do some shopping for the best price.

.tony..riot,

"Wait, so oil does leak from the flex pipe?"

No, there shouldn't be any oil coming out a hole in the flex pipe. You may see some moisture come out of a hole in it. Moisture is created upon startup of a cold engine. It usually is seen as vapor coming out the tail pipe, but if there is a hole in the flex pipe, moisture can come out of that hole. This moisture could be black from all the exhaust soot that has accumulated there through the years.

ZXLNT,

Where did you get a flex pipe for $55? That sounds real cheap.

It was. Topeka Ks at a place called of all things. "The Muffler Shop". I dispatch for Police and Fire so originally he said 75 bucks, then gave me 10 off cause I dispatch for the PO PO and we call wreckers all the time, (he has wrecker service). Anyway I go back next day to get it installed he had sold the last one. Sooo a week later I make it back it back in and he got me right in and knocked another 10 bucks off. Every other place I called wanted 100 bucks or more. So yeah it was real cheap..
