Our 2008 Highlander with the tow package developed a sudden and significant oil leak today. It appears that there is a line that runs between the radiator and the front of the engine block that is leaking. not sure if this is related to the rubber oil line class issue.

Thanks

Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately, your issue isn't the first we've seen of this, and it won't be the last.

There is no oil line to the radiator. Its the oil cooler hose, its a known failure point (pinhole leak under running pressure sprays oil out). They switched to a solid metal line in ~'11 (i think), and a few of us with earlier years have retrofitted it.

It bolts to the engine block and is below/next to the AC compressor.

Thanks for your quick response. I had read about the oil cooler line failures. I am puzzled in that this line appears to run between the radiator (but not to it) and the front of the block. Definitely oil and not tran fluid. When I was checking it out it lost about a qt in 2 minutes with engine on.

This post was a clarion call for me to do the oil cooler line replacement which I have been so lazy about. Kept shifting it to the next oil change despite having the replacement since Q4 last year.

However, I summoned up the courage over this weekend. The oil cooler line was really a PITA to remove. Space so tight up and bolts were only coming out slowing at each turn. Took over 6hrs to finish up! I wonder, how long it took you guys.

Anyway, it's behind me now. Thanks for the detail procedure in the else it could have been terrible.
