PCV Valve Rattle after Replacement

I need some help with what I think is a rattling PCV valve.

I replaced the PCV valve (with OEM). The old one looked dirty, but still rattled when I shake it. However, now with the engine at idle, I can hear a metallic clicking coming from the area of the new PCV valve. It's difficult to verify, because it's behind the intake manifold, but since I just replaced the PCV valve, what else could it be? The clicking also seems to sync up with the engine cycling..

My corolla has been burning 2 quarts of oil every 5000 miles since 80k miles. It's at 100k now. I guess worst case is there's a broken valve seal and I'm getting high pressure in the crank case. I also heard it could be a vacuum leak. I'm going to try and check the vacuum pressure, but is there anything else that I should be looking for?

*Update. I rigged a gauge from a brake bleeder pump into a tee in the vacuum booster line and it ran pretty steady at 20Hg. Accelerated a little and it hit 25Hg and came back down. It flutters a little at around 1 Hg, but I'm wondering if my vacuum rig is a bit leaky itself.

Here's a recording of the clicking:

aftermarket pcv ?

simple test would be
put the original back in momentarily
and see if it still makes that noise !?

In most cases you can clean the original
if the ball is gummed up a little.

your chatter sounds like the lifters/valves making noise.
But start simple... and go from there.

^ something to try...
since you stated the noise wasn't there
until after you replaced the pcv

far as the burning oil...
I thought there was a TSB regarding...
but that may not be your issue.

Most piston oil rings should easily survive 100K
as long as maintenance is followed religiously.

This is an OEM PCV valve. I thought about putting the old one back in, but it would be such a PITA to remove the intake manifold 2 more times. I plan on removing the PCV intake hose and plug it so there's no venting room. I will update this thread later when I have done so.

Meanwhile, I rigged up a tee onto the vacuum booster line onto a vacuum gauge. The needle was pretty steady at 21. When I ramped up to 2k rpms, it goes to a steady 25, until I lower the throttle. If there was a leaky ring with heavy blow back, I think it the pressure would spike at idle.

I'm starting to agree with you that this may be a noisy valve. Perhaps, this just developed recently and I didn't notice? The cabin is very well insulated, so I can't hear this ticking unless the hood is up. All the Toyotas in my family (camry, rav-4, 4runner, corolla) have all developed piston slap after a while and it sounds very similar to this. However, it usually stops when the engine warms up.

Removing the intake manifold is very simple and only takes about 10 minutes. I didn't even have to remove it to gain access to the PCV valve. I just loosened it and pulled it forward. Piece of cake.

The old one looked dirty, but still rattled when I shake it.
this was his 1st sentence...

put it back in a leave it then.

allllll of his cars have the exact same problem? they all have piston slap?

is it more likely that he is hearing the pcv valve and or lifters on all of them?

was the engine disassembled to verify that the rods / pins were bad or are we just guessing that its piston slap?

if the motor is shot, replace it or scrap the car and get a non-Toyota.

I have this and it is from the new OEM NAPA pcv I just had installed.

Odd to hear that you are burning oil on the 2ZR 1.8L. I've not heard of any real issues with them. I have 110k miles on my 2009 and I've turbocharged my Corolla. It doesn't burn any oil at all. I also installed an oil catch can on my Corolla.
