Power Window Problems

I've never had problems with the power windows on any of the Toyota's I've owned over the years, but my 2004 Highlander's windows are acting up.

Drivers window: Goes down without a problem, but will not go back up from the inside. You have to put the key in the lock, turn and hold in the lock position to get the window back up.
Side question: Does anyone know why Toyota designed it so you can open and close the drivers window from the outside?

Passengers front and back window: both have trouble going down (erratic) and the rear passenger window will not go up. Note these two windows are a problem only when operating from the drivers master control.

Obviously there is a problem with the drivers controls, but does anyone have any experience with this type of issue?

I once had a 94 camry with similar issues that drove me crazy. When I pulled the driver's door control unit, I found a small metal tab had somehow got into the switch pannel and was making random contacts with some of the circuts as it moved around inside the switch. My kid thought the car was possessed.

:bump:

In addition to what I originally asked, do I need to remove the whole door panel to access the underside of the window power switches? I noticed they are mounted in a sort of plate, but wasn't sure if I could safely pop that out.

The front edge of that insert/plate pops straight up and the back is in a tab. Pop the front up and slide the whole thing forward to release the rear. I've had to pull it out to fix it from rattling...not much holds it in place.

I have an 02 and have been experiencing problems with the passenger side window. It will not activate from either switch, it will click , but no movement. Is there a place here to look up common DIY fixes? I will try the search , just looking for a point in the right direction. TIA Todd

You might have to go through a "retraining process" to fix this. I just don't remember the exact procedure, but it's probably in your owner's manual. I believe this issue can occur when you disconnect the car battery, as when you are changing it. I recall the procedure is very easy. Don't go rippin' anything apart until you explore this. This can also apply to sunroof-equipped vehicles. Your local Toyota dealer might be able to tell you how to do it, as it really easy to do.

Yes, I did a new thread about the same issue 2005 HL. Still haven't found anyone that has a solution to a 'common' problem for Toyota's regardless the model. For me it's not the switches, it's not the motors, it's not 'off the tracks', it's not the master switch (which was replaced, thinking that would fix it) so still at a loss.
In fact, I had to use a battery, some make-shift leads and touch the leads to the right wires to get the window back up. That's how I found out it wasn't all those expensive parts. After all, everything worked great when I 1st got it, then slowly, one by one the passenger windows stopped working. wtf.
