Hello everyone,

The 2017 Corolla comes with Toyota Safety Sense P, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist function and Automatic High Beams working fine. But the Pre-Collision System seems not working, nothing blocking the radar and I make sure it turn on, I even adjust to highest sensitivity.

But I never get any warning and I wonder if the system not functioning, any idea how this system work?

Thank you!

"Pre-collision system" Sorry I have to LOL - that is the worst name they could think of for that...

I mean, what does it do??? Does it sense an impending collision and quickly kiss your bum goodbye, just before you slam into a brick wall???

I don't have an answer for you as I am relying on the old system of staying awake and paying attention while I'm driving.
I'm sure someone will have an actual answer for you - if not, download the PDF owners manual from toyota and use "Ctrl-F" and search for "pre-collision"

perhaps this can better explain and help?

How do you test such a system ? Many variants exist, and most studies, including IIHS praise them but not, by far, with a 100% efficiency rate.
Basically it engages when approaching an obstacle at a speed judged to high with the driver not taking action in a calculated time frame.
There is always the boxes in the backyard test, but the only real-life test would be to drive fast toward a wall to see what happen...
And even then, just like Tesla's "auto-pilot" isn't what the name imply as, sadly, Mr Brown found out, "pre-collision" is more of a damage mitigation device in case of distraction.
Autonomous cars were said to be here by 2020, with electric cars being the norm... Sorry, we're not there yet.
Not getting any warning is probably the sign that you are still a careful driver (just as I never see VSC engaged when I'm driving). Keep it that way !
(And have your system checked if it worries you).

How do you test such a system ?
Cardboard dummy vehicle rear end and pedestrian cutouts in a parking lot?

Wall with a break in it and an assistant pushes a dummy pedestrian out with a stick.

But it only takes effect above 10kph, so it's no good if you are starting on a fresh green or making a right turn and a pedestrian or wrong-way bicyclist roll in front of you just as you are starting out.

If You tink the Pre-Collision System seems not working. I presume the you don't wait for a colision and peobely never notice the automatic breek assited. But you should notice audio and light on, if you don't get thos warnings. You could presume ther is a isssue!!!

Go to your Toyota dealear it stil on waranty.

Finally, you could even go to a other Toyota dealer and ask for a test drive of the same model as yours. But do go with your brand new car they will arsk why you want to test a car you all ready own!!!

In the situation you describe, I think it is normal. The system react as mentioned previously for an obstacle a) in front of the car (so not until the "cut" maneuver is "completed") and b) if the obstacle is moving slower (or not at all) than you. Like getting in front of you then slamming the breaks without you reacting. Again, be grateful if the system help you some day but don't ever rely on it !

I think the only way you can really test the pre-collision system without having to worry about damaging your car is by getting a huge blowup prop and testing it on that. Otherwise, you'll just have to trust that the systems are working as they should. If they aren't, then a warning will display on the screen in your gauge cluster.

I have the same problem with my Yaris Active, a pre-collision system that really doesn't do any good, because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Needless to say Toyota if you are serious, make an upgrade immediately making the system work like a normal collision system that havesupplied machines less expensive than this one.

This system is designed to work when it detects it's needed. If it does activate you aren't paying attention to your driving. All systems work a little differently and if other safety systems work that uses the radar function I suspect that this system also works. I know that it freaked me out one day when I was pulling into my garage. My driveway slants up and my garage door was still opening. I knew that I would clear it okay but the system sensed that I could hit the garage door and as I was pulling it the huge "BRAKE" light came on and the car stopped. It caught me off guard but I know it works!
