Pre-runner vs 4x4 questions

I'm considering a Tacoma in the near future and assumed I'd get a 4x4 until I figured out what a pre-runner is. It looks the same and heard for all practical purposes won't get stuck in regular driving with the locking diff. I live in Iowa where we get some snow and would take it ice-fishing in MN on some lakes but imagine the pre-runner would do me just fine, right?

Anyone regret getting a pre-runner and wish they would've had a 4x4? Are there advantages (other than initial cost of 3K) to a pre-runner such as MPG and less weight?

Thanks

I love mine but it's an individual choice. I don't offroad and I wanted a V6 DC and the only way to get that is the Prerunner. You sound like you might be offoading more with your fishing trips plus the snow so if I were you I'd get the 4X4. I lived in NJ for many years and owned 4X4's there because of the winter weather but here I don't need it. You will get slightly better MPG and it will be slightly quicker with the 4X2 due to the lower weight but I honestly wouldn't consider that to be a major factor.

Bottom line, if you think you'll use it at all, get the 4X4.

to me it boils down to this: for almost the same price (relative to the huge amount of money you're already spending)
i would rather have the 4x4 just for the sake of knowing that it's there if you need it. i personally couldn't do without 4wd, but that's because i use it often and enjoy using it. even if you won't be using it by choice (for fun) it would still be worth having if you did need it, in my opinion.

I did not know you can get a PR with a locking differential. I thought the E-Locker can only be bought with a 4x4. I have a PR but it has a limited slip diff, not locking. If I drove in the snow frequently I'd get 4 wheel drive, no doubt about it.

Do you have a Sport addition? Sport comes with limited slip. The Off Road comes with a locker.

Had a 06 2X with a locker. Traded it for a 07 4X with a locker. I want to go where I want when I want so I opted for the confidence of the 4X. 2X got better gas mileage than the 4X of course. Both trucks drove pretty much the same with the 4X feeling a bit heaver and a little more stuck to the road.

If you’re worried about gas go with the 2X. If paying a little extra to drive it doesn’t matter to you go 4X you won’t regret it. It offers sooooo many more opportunities.

Most people who buy prerunners do so because they don't need and will never use 4x4 so you'll find only a couple people here who would regret it. I don't, in the almost three years i've owned my truck i've never once been in a situation where i went, "Sonova Bitch i wish i went with 4x4" But in your case it looks like you might need 4x4, i have no clue what type of roads you'll be going on for you fishing trips so honestly its a judgement call.

I looked at it like this, it would have cost me 3 more thousand for a 4x4, Thats about 11% of the price of a 26k truck, some say thats a small number but to me it's pretty big, big enough to not get 4x4.

The mileage fluctuates a pretty good bit depending on how the vehicle is driven, tires and etc.

06 2X averaged 17.5 in the city and 22.5 highway, driving no faster than 70 with the ac on. The 4X averaged 16 to 6.5 in the city and I was getting 19.5 at 70 mph with the ac on on the highway with the stock 265/70 16s. Put the 265/75 on it last week. City is now 15.75 to just over 16 without the ac. It has been cool around here up until yesterday. Drove it to Alabama and back running 75 for the most part and got just over 17 with no ac. That’s after adjusting 3.3% for the tire size. I was a little disappointed with the drastic drop on the hwy mpg. I don’t believe I’ll gain 2.5 mpg by dropping my speed to 70 but who know. I’ll find out next road trip.

I bought a prerunner not anticipating ever going off road, just bought it to haul bikes and pull a trailer.

Now I like going off road and there are a lot of places I can't go, and spend a lot of time getting unstuck where 4x4 would get through no problem.

I am considering selling mine and buying a 4x4 TRD OR

Thanks! Maybe I'll stick with looking at 4x4. Is it a "4Hi" type system where if the roads were icy I could go 50-60mph in 4wd? I had a couple grand cherokees and am use to those.

My last Taco was a Pre-runner and I made sure never to make that mistake again. Of course my last Taco I bought in So Cal...where they are everywhere...it was really hard to find a Pre-runner in CO :D

JTDTacoma, sounds like you are already set on 4WD, but here is a little info on Prerunners for our region (North Central). LSD is not an available option. You can get LSD if you get a TRD Sport Prerunner (it's standard on that model). Otherwise, like me, you need to special order LSD on the standard Prerunner, a 4 month process. Not sure if there is such a thing as a TRD Off-Raod Prerunner with a locker. My comments were valid for 07 Prerunners in this region, things may have changed for 08 so check it out.

the TRD Offroad package for the prerunner DOES include a locker, but it will run you $2500-$3000 for the package......only a little less than the 4x4

IMO, resale is good for either vehicle. the 4x4 will be worth more when you sell it because it costs more to buy it initially.....they both will hold their value on a percentage of cost basis and all things being equal between the trucks with the exception of 4wd vs 2wd.

It all depends on what you're gonna do with the truck.... If you think you'll be doing something where you'll get stuck, go ahead with the 4x4.

I have the PreRunner and I'm more than happy with it.....Great for me cause I saved a few $$$$, but it may not be great for you....

It's such a relative question that It is almost not worth asking... Of course, Everyone that has a 4x4 thinks that they made the best decision and would want you to get that..... everyone with a PreRunner says get the 2wd.... and if you took a poll, more people on this site have the 4x4....so you're going to get a biased result no matter which way you spin it..

SO, in summary, just get what you NEED........ and if you can't make up your mind, get the 4x4 so you'll be safe either way!!!

Good luck!

just wanted to point out that....

i see a lot of people with prerunners say that they do not plan to off road, etc. but using 4x4 doesn't necessarily mean that you plan on off roading. you can accidently get stuck somewhere, where only 4x4 (or someone else's truck + winch) can get you out. maybe i'm just being biased bc i have 4x4. unless you are in an area with 0% chance of getting stuck in snow, mountains, etc, get the 4x4 for those "just in case" moments.

I live in N.Cal and no snow and I don't OR so I wouldn't use the 4x4, but there are maintanence issues as well as intial cost. I used to live in Tahoe and then of course I would have one then. Chains take about 1 second to install on the Prerunner if you need the traction. About $40 bucks vs the 3K...Rich

the only way to get the locker it to drop the extra 3K for the TRD package. i know, cause its what i did....)but that was before you could get aftermarket lockers for the tacoma). I do sometimes think the 3 grand would have been better spent getting a base v6 with 4WD. might be tough to find, but If I had it to do again, its what I would look for.

I chose the 4x4 because I think if you're gonna get a truck, it should be 4WD. When you have to put chains on a truck to get up a mountain, it's just silly as AWD Subies pass you up. I like to be able to go places my MR2 isn't able to go, so having a 4x4 is the way to do that.
