I've had a noise that occurrs under neutral throttle or deceleration at highway speeds since I purchased my '05 regular cab, 4x4, 4cyl manual new last year. The noise sounds like a bad bearing, that will rattle when the driveline is under no load and seems to come from the driveshaft area. The noise also seemed to dissapear when the bed has a load of 500lbs or so as if driveshaft angle had something to do with it.
Last fall, I brought this to the attention of the local dealer, and they changed out the transmission, rear differential, and driveshaft. This did not help. After riding with the regional service manager, he said that this noise was related to the particular model truck I have, that being regular cab 4x4, 5speed manual. He said that filling the diveshaft with foam may help silence it, but for some reason the truck would not make any noise while he was riding with me. The noise got better during winter months, but since it's been hot here I've heard it everyday all summer.
Anyone else noticed a noise like this? I think it may only affect those of us with regular cab pickups. I've thought about shimming the rear axle up a degree or two, to see if that will help. The fact that changing out almost the entire driveline did not fix the problem leads me to believe this is not an isolated case and that it must affect other trucks. I'd take it back to the dealer, but Toyota has already proven that they can't fix it!
