Rattle noise from driveshaft

I've had a noise that occurrs under neutral throttle or deceleration at highway speeds since I purchased my '05 regular cab, 4x4, 4cyl manual new last year. The noise sounds like a bad bearing, that will rattle when the driveline is under no load and seems to come from the driveshaft area. The noise also seemed to dissapear when the bed has a load of 500lbs or so as if driveshaft angle had something to do with it.

Last fall, I brought this to the attention of the local dealer, and they changed out the transmission, rear differential, and driveshaft. This did not help. After riding with the regional service manager, he said that this noise was related to the particular model truck I have, that being regular cab 4x4, 5speed manual. He said that filling the diveshaft with foam may help silence it, but for some reason the truck would not make any noise while he was riding with me. The noise got better during winter months, but since it's been hot here I've heard it everyday all summer.

Anyone else noticed a noise like this? I think it may only affect those of us with regular cab pickups. I've thought about shimming the rear axle up a degree or two, to see if that will help. The fact that changing out almost the entire driveline did not fix the problem leads me to believe this is not an isolated case and that it must affect other trucks. I'd take it back to the dealer, but Toyota has already proven that they can't fix it!

No, I'm running the stock fluids. The dealer put synthetic in the tranny since I was having a hard time shifting when temps were below freezing. I'm sure the dealer put normal fluid back in after the rear diff change.

Someone else as to have this noise! It is sometimes accompanied by a slight droning. It's one of those things that someone could drive my truck for a few days and not notice, but once you hear it and lock on to the noise, you can discern it over the A/C and radio at times.

The only thing that hasn't been changed out on the truck's driveline is the transfer case. I would think that the transfer case would make noise under most conditions if it were the cuplrit. like I said this noise only happens during that split second when letting off the gas from a steady cruise. Imagine the noise a skateboard wheel makes if you spin it hard...

Just read your post on TTORA. I was also thinking the noise may be related to the slip yoke on the drive shaft as temperature seems to be a factor on my truck. I looked for a grease fitting to pump it full of grease, but of course there isn't one.

I was going to take off the front of the shaft and rotate it 180deg to see if that helped last night. I got the 4 nuts off, but the shaft was stuck on the transfer case output. A screwdriver and hammer still wouldn't budge it. Well, it got dark so I put it back together for another day.

I'll be interested to hear if that works out if you get a chance to try it again.

I am kind of curious if Toyota made a batch of shafts that are not the proper diameter where it mates with the slip yoke.

I will post back if the replacement driveline improves this issue.....if I can ever get the dealership to give me a firm ETA.

I'd be interested to see if the noise stays gone for good.

I'm taking my truck in next week for the clutch pedal TSB and have been debating if I should bring it up agaion or not. Last time they changed every damn part on the truck and it didn't help. I'm going to try and rotate the driveshaft again this weekend if it doesn't rain. I'm also putting a camper shell on the back Saturday and have been hoping that maybe the extra 160lbs will improve the pinion angle enough to help.

Thread Revival!

Same rattle, it feels almost like the transfer case hasn't completely disengaged and I'm getting feedback from the driveshaft to the front diff. it is happening when I let off the throttle and am coasting. Almost a vibration almost a rumble. I really wish I could figure out what is making this noise. (06 dbl cab, sr5 4x4)

I'm glad to hear other people have it too. I have a 06 access cab with the 6 speed. Any time I am in neutral or when there is no load on the driveline I get a horrible rattle when I go over anything like train track, speed bumps, bumps in dirt roads. Even when I am wheeling really slow if I shove the clutch in while going down over some rocks or something it rattles. About ready to sell my truck it pisses me off so bad.

yeah I have pushed, pulled, rolled and lubed. Nothin helps. Went to the dealer and we took a brand new one out and sure enough it did the same thing. Just said that they are designed with a certain amount of forward and reverse play in the driveline setups. The tech had never had a truck brought in with this problem and couldn't believe how loud it is. Just kinda sucks that this is the way they are designed. There was another guy on here that went to the dealer and took out a brand new 08 and sure enough with the 6 speed it made the rattle. Those 04's are looking better and better....!
