This mechanic talked me into spending $450 on replacing the water pump and belt on my 01 corolla, he says it needs to be replaced every 60000 miles, mine is around 90000 miles and still had the original pump, anyway, should I find another mechanic for my future auto repairing needs? help newbie here:disappoin

I take it your talking about your serpentine belt? I always thought that something like water pumps, alternators, radiators, steering pump Etc... you didn't have to replace it till it went bad  Its not like a timing belt that should be replaced in a certain time frame...If you didn't have any problems like squealing or leaking you might have driven it another 90K ;) ...They only start leaking/squealing at the bushings anyway and when that happens its time to replace because it might freeze up......water pump--$30-70 serpentine belt---$25, anti freeze---$10....You paid $450...Over $350 in labor to install a simple water pump that should taken them(with all kinds of great tools) no longer then an hour :whatthe: I would say you got ripped in more ways then one....We just put a water pump on my buds 95 Pontiac last month...took and hour and cost under $40, I had a water pump and timing belt put in my 86 rolla a few years ago for $250.....Radd Guy...

damn :sosad: he charged me $255 for labor and $170 for the parts which includes a water pump and a serpertine belt, when I looked at the bill I knew something was wrong. I live in an apartment and the lease forbids any auto work (some people do it anyway but not me)

I started to trust this guy when he replaced a driveaxle for 1/2 the cost another garage charges, when he starts to know me he realizes I know little about cars and now this, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!:hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

my uncles owns a shop and shops have to mark up the prices on parts to make a profit because they have to get the parts from a parts house just like a nowmal person would and they dont actually charge for the amount of time it takes them to replace the part they charge u for the time the repair manual says it should take so pretty much if it takes them say 20 mins to do somthing and the book says it is supposed to take an hour they charge u for the hour

^^ Yup, exactly. Nine out of ten jobs they do takes significantly less than the book time, yet they charge the full amount. That factoid right there is 90% of the reason most of us do the work ourselves. I've saved (roughly, according to my feeble calculations) $8000-$10,000 in labour costs over the last 5 or 6 years. As long as you don't mind spending Saturday afternoon under the car, you're laughing!

Yep...Their repair manual is their bible, its funny though if the book says 1 hour and they do it in 1/2 you still get charged the 1 hour labor but if they run into a problem and it takes two hours guess who has to pay? Then they get around the first estimate by saying "after removing bla bla bla we saw other problems....lol...As for the mark up on parts I could never figure that out...Glad I have a friend that owns a shop, when I'm having trouble putting a part on I take it to him and he doesn't mind me buying the part(can't do it all the time) and only charges minimal labor cost, great to have a lift and all those power tools...Radd Guy...

I also live in an apartment complex that "forbids" doing any auto repairs on the property. If it's something relatively simple like replacing a belt to the alternator or a basic tune up, I'll do it there anyway. Most of these places just don't want the oil or gas on their grounds.

As for the mechanic....Call around to different mechanics to get a better price!

hi, i am new here.

Here are the quick facts:
- car is corolla 2006 at 97,000 miles (96, 900+)
- it has had the serpentine belt replaced in the past at Toyota service
- all other service always done there since the car was bought brand new
- never had over/heating or cooling issues
- this past days leaking a little clear fluid under passenger side that looks like condensation but without using AC
- opened hood and checked - it comes from short black hose sticking out from where glove compartment would be.

Problem:

My Toyota branch (Southern CA, Ventura county) is asking me, actually pushing, to replace water pump. they said back in March 2013 at our regular check up that "it's time" to replace water pump and warned it over $460. Again, like many posts here said, they want all labor parts and time spent soemthing like $464 or $450 depending on the location i shopped. by researching online, i understand $$$ it's excessive, quite a rip off, the leak is not even coming from the pump area. i don't lnow where condensation seeps out from, but this black hose seems like it...

Questions:
1. where online can i find a clear picture diagram that shows actual location/mount of the water pump in Corolla 06?
2. where on a diagram can i see the condensation exhaust hose?
3. is there an official price list for all parts, labor etc related to pump to go by?
4. is it true that at under or at 100K pump HAS to be replaced?
5. where can one fine investigative reporters/inspectors to intervene and detect fraud?

As I said, we have had no problems so far with temperature, there's only mild trickle on passenger side esp after car has been driven with or without AC.

thanks!
M
