Reverse Noise when cold starting

My truck seems to be making a weird grindingish noise when I first crank up and shift into reverse. It doesnt really sound or feel like it's coming from the transmission.

It's a 2005 V6 automatic tacoma.

Is this normal?

After it's warm it doesnt happen. It almost sounds like a card in bicycle spokes...

Any ideas?

After the hurricane it'll be awhile before I can get it officially checked.

Interesting...

I was thinking it might be something that goes away with breakin, but that may just be wishful thinking.

Looks like my dealership didn't fair to well in the hurricane, so I'll just have to live with it for a little bit.

I just didn't want it be one of those neglected problems that turns into something big.

My 2005 Toyota Tacoma double cab makes a similar noise.

When I first start it up and put it in gear and start to move, I hear what sounds like a spring. It's very faint and can only be heard if it's really quiet. I didn't even notice it for the first few weeks I had the truck. I used to hear it when backing up in my driveway but then I noticed it was occurring when I first depressed the accelerator after a cold start. I could even feel it through the gas pedal slightly. It does not always occur when I first touch the gas pedal though; sometimes all I have to do is start moving. If I stop the truck and put it in park without shutting it off, it doesn't do it. I can easily replicate the noise by stopping, shutting it off, restarting it and start to move.

When I took it in for its first oil change at the dealership I replicated the sound for the technician and he said that it is common. He said there is no throttle cable, it is all electronic now. So what you are hearing is the accelerator function engaging for the first time after a cold start.

That spring sound is the ABS brakes doing a self-test.
No, it's a different sound. This one happens almost as soon as you put it into gear, the ABS check happens after you move a few feet.

I was kind of thinking it might be the AC compressor coming on. Maybe if it hasn't been used for a few days it makes some kind of noise.

That's what that sound is? Every time I first take off, especially in the morning, I hear this "mmmpfhh" sound, like a pump or something. Always happens when I am turning right as well. Thought it was that evaporator thingy that goes off every 4 hours.

The sound mine makes is like if you were to roll your "r's" when speaking Spanish...

It only does it in reverse, and only when the truck hasnt warmed up yet. You can put it in reverse and let totally off the brake and it still does it. You can idle in reverse with the brake fully pressed and it still does it.

Dude, I'm surprised you're even worrying about this, given where you live and what happened last week. Are you living out of your truck?

Actually we were some of the lucky ones. I live about 10 miles inland, so the storm surge didn't directly hit us. Some trees are down, but the house is perfectly fine now that the power is back on.

Now it's just down to helping out friends and family until the insurance people and fema can come in and start providing the funds to get everyone else going again.

My truck has 7500 miles on it and it still makes a grinding noise after it has been parked for a while ( 24-36 hours ) It sounds like it is coming from the transmission. I took it to the "stealership" and they said they could not Duplicate the noise, therefore they could not troubleshoot it. I need to check and see if they can install some kind of scanning device to capture the sound when it occurs. Mine has been loud enough that others in the parking lot heard it.
