Rotor Recommendations

I am going to try the Akebono Ceramic pads on my 2013 Camry SE 4 cylinder. I need a recommendation for a good quality rotor. I am not interested in slotted or drilled rotors I just need a good quality rotor for my daily driver. I've had decent luck with Brembo rotors in the past and Bosch QuietCast rotors, but not on my Camry. Just looking for some suggestions! Thanks in advance!

You could always go with the factory OEM rotors. You know you're getting good quality, and they're not really much more than most of the aftermarket options.

I can get you the pads as well. Our TCMC pads (some call them the AZ pads) are ceramic and made by Akebono.
The OEM rotors are good, but just good, no offense. The OEM rotors/pads are not designed to last under less or more aggressive driving or high heat environment/city driving. I had 3 Camry with OEM rotors and all of them got warped by 25-30K. My brother in law replaced the OEM rotors on his RX and IS and my buddy replaced his Venza rotors apprx. by the same mileage. I had better experience with NAPA Gold and Wagner rotors. My other buddy has only 10K on the 2015 CAmry and already talking about steering wheel vibration under hard braking. Also based on my experience the OEM pads last 25-30K while Wagner ThermoQuiet have better stopping power and last at least twice longer.

I never had Brembo, but NAPA Gold and Wagner rotors. About a 1.5-2 years ago I got EBC Ultimax slotted rotors and absolutely love them. Combined with Wagner ThermoQuiet pads they took both initial bite and overall braking to a completely different level and after 15-17K they show no signs of warping.

As always, I love the advice I get on this forum. I really liked the Brembo Rotors I had on my matrix a few years back. Problem is with those, my caliper locked up and it was toast. But before then, they were working really well for me. But, I think I will give the Centric Premium rotors a try for my Camry.

I agree with molson.david, the Toyota factory pads and rotors are not bad, but I've never had rotors warp for no reason. Granted I've gotten a lot of miles out of my current pads, but do not think I have ever drove the Camry hard enough for the Rotors to warp. I drove my old Matrix much harder due to its much tighter handling.

BUT, Is there any compelling reason why I should consider the raybestos professional ceramic pads or Wagner ThermoQuiet pads over the Akebono ceramics?

They don't "warp", really. When you stop hard or from a high speed (say, an exit ramp off a highway to a light) and then leave the pads touching the rotor, the pad material bakes itself on to the rotor disc. This creates a high spot on the rotors as more and more pad material builds up on that spot and the rest is just bare metal, and those high spots cause the brakes the shake as they pass by the pads each time.

There are rotors that dissipate heat better than others, and there are better pad compounds that resist baking to the rotors as well, both of which will help mitigate this from happening again. Typically OEM compounds/brakes are concerned with two things: no noise and pad longevity. Braking performance ("bite") and heat/fade resistance are much lower on their list.

The stock pads/rotors on my Chevy were so horrible that I changed them within 20K, but every Toyota I've had in the family had shaking brakes around 40-50K or so too.

No compelling reason to go with one pad compound over another - it is pretty much a matter of personal preference. Just don't use the cheap "economy" level pads.

What I have learned from my brakes class....

OEM rotors are the best standard performance rotors you could ever place on your car. OEM factory produces the rotor thickness way over than the aftermarket makers. Hence why most Toyota dealers will resurface your current ones without a problem. This fact also includes with brake pads too. I see Toyota Care 5k cars with pad thickness of 11mm-12mm on average day while working at a Milwaukee area Toyota dealer.

But if you want "performance" rotors or pads (which I can understand. I LOVE the look of drilled & slotted rotors) Look at Rockauto.com. They have slotted/drilled or just drilled or slotted rotors for cheap price. I wish EBC would make their 3G rotors for '12-15 Camrys. Those rotors and "red stuff" brake pads is such a high performance setup: my old tC had that setup and it was really hard to go back to a OEM setup when I trade it in.

I had NAPA rotors and they were as thick as OEM.
