This is about a 2007 RAV4 base trim with a 4 cyn engine. about 69,000 miles on it. Lost a battery on it about 2 weeks ago and had a new fuel pump installed last year other then that it has been a good little SUV.
For the past couple of weeks I have been hearing a vibration noise/rough idle that would come and go . After paying more attention I discovered that it only happens when I am in drive and stopped with the brake pedal applied. I had my wife sit in the car (with the parking brake on) and put the car in drive and keep the foot on the brake. With the brake applied the entire air filter assembly shakes, violently. If you put the car in any other gear it stops. It also stops if you let off the break. For obvious reasons I can't really test it driving that way but the sound stops when the car is in motion.
My Mileage has been dropping in the past few months and I figure both are related. What can I do on my own to further test this or repair it.
It almost seems like exhaust is being pushed back into the intake but I can't figure why that would be tied to brakes. But I'm a computer tech not a mechanic so maybe I'm missing something obvious.
Thanks in advance
