I was wounder what you guys with manuals was getting for RPM's at say 70 MPH? (tell me if you are using 1.6, 1.8, C50, C52)

When I was using my 4 speed auto at 70 I was getting right at 2k or under.

What gear you causally in for city and town driving?

I dont want to swap the trans if I have to be in mid 4th or 5th just to be going 35. Just starting 5th or the end of 4th gear going 55 would be ideal.
I dont really want to loose MPG's either. I was getting 30 MPG going 70.
I dont want to be higher then 2300 RPM just to be going 70MPH.

Any insight on this would be nice.

7AFE, C52
110km/h (the freeway speed limit here) = ~3200rpm in 5th.

The 7AFE has enough low-down torque that you can stick it in 5th as low as 50km/h and just potter around, it'll hold speed up hills in 4th at 50km/h too

How the heck are people still getting good MPG's then with the manuals if the RPM are that high. That would sound like the car would be annoying.

In my 4 speed if I was that high it would go from 30MPG to like 24MPG.

Well then what are you getting for top speed ever try it?
My 4 speed was getting over the 110mph/177 KPH mark.

Well that is not to bad but if I had a performance pipe on it would be annoying. Then again a lot of noise comes from the auto.

From what I read the C50 and C52 have the same gear ratios for all 5 gears but the final on the C52 is smaller and it also has a Differential gear ration to the C50 does not? So this would make the difference of reeving higher move back to equivalent of the C50? IDK

I was thinking of putting a C60 (6 speed) in there but after calculating it it would just improve accelerating. RPMs from the C52 vs the C60 would be very little the final overall ratios are the same pretty close . If the bell housing dont match they can be switched.
Then I thought about this idea a guy on the Honda Element forums. He took his 5 speed and simply made it a 6th speed and just got a larger gear all for $60.
The result was from 3500@70 to 2800@70. He just added R was moved over and 6th taken place of R. If I get a C52 I will take it aprt anyways to inspect it and see if its possible. Then try finding ears that are that size and I can always bore it or mod it to fit it.

I just dont see how a auto can run at 2k@70 but you cant get a manual from a factory like that. The gear does not have to be used for faster acceleration or anything special just drop the RPMs make it less annoying (it might not be that annoying on the manual but sure is on auto). Still droping RPMs for better HWY cursing better MPG's

I live 20 miles away from any place in a very small town so I am always cruising 55 to 70 depending where I go and most of the city parts are 55 and they are not that big. I have to drive 620 mi in 1 weekend every month for the Army 100 of it is all at 55, 500 of it is at 70 and 80, and the other is on city 15-55. Then during winter I do 1000 mi round trips every weekend for snowmobile racing and some times do scrap runs.

1st is different between C50 and C52

As for top speed, I've wound the clock out to 200km/h, that was just about on redline though (6300). Private road of course...

I agree you do loos a lot of power in auto specially in the more older car. If I recall there are 7 or so friction disk/plate clutch pack. You loosing alot of power form the converter, and friction from the clutch packs. Then you have to worry about the electronics or the governor to do the shifting. Lots of fluid to make it run to.
Auto when you spin them faster compared to the Manuals make lots more noise.
Since manuals dont have power lost compared to the auto it take far less fuel to spin then at that RPM. Also manuals need to stay in a higher range to keep the power band up and stop the engine from lugging.

I am going to do the swap for now and later on I am going to find a C160 or C60. If I cant I am going to by the two shafts install the C52 gears in there and get a larger 6th gears (I wont be gaining acceleration of a 6 speed) that way I can use the 6th to drop the RPM if I thing it needed might also get a new top speed from it. I will also have to get the extension hosing.
