Hi all, was checking out a 2017 Limited Platinum with 65k miles that spent most of its life prior to now in Ontario Canada. I was wary about rust so I took some photos of what I could see under the car in the lot. I have asked them to get it on the lift and take more photos for me this week. I am not sure how to tell what is surface rust (and can be scraped off and painted over/sealed) and what is going to require new parts.

TIA for any advice

You need to get any vehicle sprayed with something every few years if no every year. Depends on you salt exposure etc. Krown or some other company does the under vehicle spraying as well as panel. However, enough shop don't do the panels very well. The weep hole should drip fluid (bottom of doors, tail gate etc), otherwise it not near enough. The Toyota paint is extremely thin electrostatic application. Anything can violate it I found on my rear tailgate slight cracks in the paint rusting through. No warranty for this as 3 years is all they honor.

Wow look very very good. Must us a lot of cans doing that. Its good stuff but you do need to also get it in the panels to coat and weep down to the lower area. When I've done some panel spray myself I buy the Rust Cheak product which I find on sale. Its not a substitute to not getting it done at a spray place due to the spray equipment is far better application.

A lot of dripping likely. My drive is gravel and I also park on the grass to collect some that isn't wiped away.

Those pics show mostly 'surface' rust. But, I would take a screw driver with me and poke (hard) on it where it looks worst and especially where suspension components move back/forth or swing (like rear trailing arms) or where there are holes made by factory - that is where salt hides and does its dirty work.

If nothing breaks thru then its probably OK, Luck.
