To begin, sorry for another TPMS thread I've had a strange but pleasant experience with the TPMS sensors but wanted to share and see your thoughts.

  • Bought new 2022 Highlander in August of 2022, obviously it came with Toyota OEM sensors
  • In October of 2022 I got new wheels + winter tires and opted NOT to get any sensors on them fully expecting to be driving all winter with the tire pressure light on
  • Not only did the light not come on but viewing the dash it clearly shows the tire pressures of all 4 tires. Confused I thought ok whatever
  • Fast forward to January when I took the car in for service I mentioned the confusion and upon picking up my car they stated they looked and see that there are sensors on the winter tires and that perhaps Kal Tire swapped the sensors from the all seasons onto the winters, it was their only explanation as to why it would show the PSI instead of the light coming in as I thought it would
  • In April I went to Kal Tire to swap back to my all season tires + wheels and mentioned hey did you guys move the sensors over? I never saw anything on the bill stating they did. When the tire swap was almost done a guy came over to advise hey we just checked and there are sensors on both your all seasons and winter tires, maybe you forgot you brought in your own sensors for us to put in during your tire swap? Again confused but just played dumb like oh yea maybe.

So I guess the good news is I have TPMS sensors on both set of tires somehow. Did Kal TIre somehow make a mistake and put on sensors that were meant for someone else? I mean it's been verified that both set of tires have TPMS sensors and the light has never come on even once and tire pressure has been showing. So sure fantastic, saved me some money and assuming it's all true wouldn't the new sensors that are on the winter tires be required to be registered by Toyota? So yea still confused but I guess pleasantly surprised.

Did this change on newer models of Toyotas? I guess I understood that to register new sensors you needed to go to Toyota or a 3rd party place where you needed a special tool to do it rather than doing it manually through the car settings. I did neither so was confused. I guess this might be a classic case where I should read the manual it probably says something about it 😅

No special tool required to register a new set of TPMS sensors for our generation of Highlanders. Besides reading the owners manual there are more information on the forum but also do a search for winter tires. The sensors from Kal Tire might be the after market programmable types that can be cloned (I have a post on this), this would explain why your TPMS warning light never came on.
