Im the 3rd owner of my 85 pre tacoma (thanks to GrnXnham for clarification on model) and i can say with happiness that my shifter is actually very tight, it doesnt grind in gears at all, and it moves fluidly from one to the next. :D

i was having a problem with mine popping out of gear and hard to shift into 4th without grinding, ended up replacing my shifter seat and bushing...around $12 US from the local stealership

my seat was destroyed;
