Speedo error

Hey all-

I've owned my 05 4 cyl, 5 spd Access Cab for about two weeks now. Wherever I go, I always "feel" like I'm going slower than the speedo says.

Guess what? I'm right!

I used a GPS to check my speed yesterday and found out that the speedo is off by about 9% accross the dial!!!

25 mph is really 23 mph
35 mph is really 32 mph
55 mph is really 50-51 mph
65 mph is really 60 mph

My Tacoma is stock, with the SR5 16" Aluminum wheels and 245/75R16 tires.

Very annoying, to say the least. Is there a way my dealer can re-calibrate the speedo?

Congrats, you found Toyotas little secret, none of there cars really run to 200,000 miles with out problems, really they only go to 140,000 miles like everyone else but the tweak their speedos to read more miles than traveled. (yes I know my numbers do not reflect a 9% difference, LOL)

me too...

05 4x4 access cab. stock 15" wheels (5-speed)

Same percentages- I used the police unmanned radar station.

I felt something was off -AS I DROVE IT HOME FROM THE DEALER!

oh well, it's probably saved me from a couple speeding tix.

One really annoying thing about it is that your getting less gas mileage than the odometer indicates. Mines off too, 4%, 60mph=57.5 by GPS. I don't know if the dealer can reset or not. I'm going to just put up with it until I need new tires. Then replace my stock 215-70R15's with 235-70R15's. According to various tire size calculators that will correct the error. 9% is pretty severe though. I don't know if you could even fit large enough tires to correct that much error.

Hmmm... now I wonder if it's a "tire" issue or the speedo...

I'll check speedo miles against the GPS next time I'm out. If the mileage counter is off as well, then we're all getting 9% LESS MPG, too! :ugh3:

Well, the fact that you're running 15s and I've got 16s probably explains the difference in speedo error.

So, with 17s you'd be doing, like 50 when the speedo says 60!?!

275-75R17's would solve your 9% error. Thats a pretty expensive fix though, new rims and all, don't know if they'd even fit.

I bought an 05 Silverado at the same time as my Tacoma, it's speedo is dead on accuate with it's stock tires. Bummer is, I want to put bigger tires on it which will throw it's speedo off in the other direction. Theres got to be a way to recalibrate.

I just came from a 2004 GMC Sierra to the Tacoma. There are lots of different options for correcting speedo error in GM trucks. Wish there were the same options for the Toyotas as well.

My local service guy says there is no way to correct the speedo error at this point. Because I want to go to bigger tires also. Don't know if mine is off on the speedo or not. I know at 75 i'm buzzing past people usually on the way home. GM definitely has a multitude of ways to correct for tire changes and gear changes.

So, what's the final analysis?
Is both the speedo & odometer 'off'?
Or is just the speedo 'off', and the odometer is right 'on'?

I ask before I replace my V6 4x4 DblCab tires, 245/75/16s, with
265/70/16s or
265/75/16s.

Thanks in advance,

Actually, wheel size isn't the determining factor, overall tire diameter is. Run a taller tire and your speedometer will show a slower speed. This is because for any given distance, a larger tire will turn less revolutions.

i was talking to a local off road shop about a lift install and asked the same question. the answer I got was having a new "speed sensor" gear cut and installed. I don't have a fsm so i don't know if we have a gear or a sensor. Somebody with a fsm can check that.

Have you paced another car to check the speedo accuracy? With my 285/75/16's I am about 10mph faster than my speedo says at about 70mph, but than when I drove by one of those unmanned radar guns, my speedo was accurate to the speed displayed it said I was going? I dont know who to trust. lol

I think GPS is the only true way to tell IMO.

have other people tested GPS units on other cars whos speedo was accurate?
I did this with my other car back awhile ago and it was dead on for the most part...at about 150mph it varied about a mile or two on the speedo. I am going to try it out on the truck today. I will see how it goes.

So, is the speedo/odometer error of 2005/6 Tacomas real, or a myth?
Has Toyota acknowledged anything about this? If so,
is there a Toyota fix for the speedo/odometer error?

I just went to a couple of tire stores today to have 265/75/16 Bridgestone Dueler Revos installed on my 2005 V6 DblCab LB Tacoma 4x4. Went to a couple of places, Costco included. Guess what I found out. The tire outlets will sell me the tires, but will not install or warrenty the tires or assume liability because 265/75/16s are not a Toyota aproved OEM size. They will sell, install & warranty 265/70/16s, but not 265/75/16s

There is no need to double post. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t110647.html

edit: Let me correct myself... there is no need to triple post the same exact message (I just found another one)...

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t110935-2.html (message #17)

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t110647.html (message #10)

and this thread... http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t100666-2.html (message #18)

You only need to post any given message once. I can just about guarantee that someone here WILL read it and probably respond to it. If they don't and you still have questions (make sure you give it some time), just respond to the original message with something like "BUMP" or "BTT" (Back To Top) and sooner or later someone will respond. It might be rude and sarcastic, but you will get something. ;)

All my Toyotas have been off.

Tacoma:

4% fast on speedo
2% high on mileage

4runner +1 size on tires:

3% slow on speedo
5% low on mileage

87 Truck:

8% slow on speedo

So you need to correct your MPG calculations with any Toyota.

All of my cars / trucks / sportbikes have had this issue. I would say it's just the nature of the beast

With my GPS before getting 265/70/17 tires, when my speedo said 75, my GPS had me at about 72-73 mph; I just got used to riding around with my speedo at 77. I haven't tested it after the larger size, though but hope that I'm about even now.

A friend of mine had a Yukon with 20"s and had the change recognized in the computer.

Also, my new tires aren't the stock size and I got no guff about it from the Firestone that put them on.

They're all in the same....I would think.

My 2007 is indeed 2mph off (as mentioned in the original post) - checked it with my GPS also. I believe the mileage is off just the same.

Although I was on the highway going 60mph - I picked a set point on both GPS and odometer. While I'm traveling at 60mph...when the truck would 'turn over' at X point - I'd turn my head and look at the GPS quick and the mileage on the GPS would turn over just as I turned my head. So...the amount of time it took for my head to turn and look at the GPS an see it turn over...... at 60mph.. Tells me the odometer is clicking faster along with the speedo.

I'm bone stock with air pressure at 29psi as recommended in the door jam.
