My '03 Tacoma has devoloped a squeak/groan noise in the steering wheel when I turn it very slowly off center, either direction for only about 10 degrees either way.

Anybody else have this and where did you find the problem to be coming from?

Thanks in advance.

When the bushings went out on my rack, there was no noise invloved, I just had horrible handling on rutted highways.
You might try getting one of those $5 stethescopes at a tool store & see if you can narrow down it's cause that way...

It is the steering shaft cover where the steering shaft comes through the firewall; the piece that goes around the shaft that keeps the noise and dirt out. Just push it down slightly and put some grease on it to see if the noise goes away.

N.E.O.

I tried that, it was not coming from there either. I think I will need to remove the plastic around the stalks. It seems like it is coming from there.

Monkeee2002. I have a stethescope and will try to isolate the noise that way. Thanks for reminding me I have it. One of those tools that is buried until you need it....... ;)

Hmm, that is the most common cause of the noise you had described. The other possible but less common cause could be the spiral cable for the Airbag.

N.E.O.
As soon as the temps get out of the great frozen tundra range, I'll take the covers off to see If I can pinpoint it.

I'll let you know.

- 12 degrees this morning, but he still started up.

sorry to raise this up again :) but i faced the same problem in two location.

1. near the fire wall. just change that rounded bussuing will solve it.

2. steering wheel, i Though the plastic were totching while turning. but i found out it is from the spiral cable. that thing cost alot (120$+) i put some oil and noise gone.
(for a week or so).

so, any spicial lubricat for spiral cable?
